Music Another Reason Why Canada Beats The Pants Off Of The U.S.

If you missed it, I pity you. Last night’s New Pornographers show at the Crystal Ballroom was incredible. Despite the venue’s cavernous interior and notoriously hit-or-miss sound quality, the Canadian supergroup killed the place with pop perfection—one gem after another.

I saw them at Wonder Ballroom two years ago, and it was obvious at the time that they hadn’t really gotten used to playing together as a live band, rather than as Carl Newman’s studio project. This time around, though, they’ve clearly worked out those kinks. Neko Case’s voice was flawless, Dan Bejar stumbled around the stage like your favorite creepy drunk uncle (between songs during the encore, he stared at Neko Case’s chest and asked, “What’s your shirt say?”), and Newman played the role of indie rock’s most unassuming frontman.

Mostly, though, this entry is just an excuse for me to post some photos I took—I figure I should earn the photo pass they were kind enough to give me.

There are a couple more after the jump. Were you there? What’d you think?

And one of my favorite NP songs:

It was a fantastic show last night -- though I disagree with you about them finally gelling as a band. I think the awkwardness you experienced last time had to do with Bejar being with them, which he supposedly rarely is.
I saw them touring for 'The Electric Version' years back, and they were just as fantastic back then.

However, am I the only one who felt that there were parts of last night's show wherein the sound person decided to crank everyone's levels up to 11?
I'm partially deaf, and parts of that show were unnecessarily loud.

wheee! a recording of the show can be found here: http://sometimesitapestuff.blogspot.com
