While I collect a big fat paycheck for my blogging skills, I’m not an expert on everything. There is one thing I don’t know a lick about, and that’s the confusing world of twee music. What is it? What does it sound like? If I touch it, will it burn me?
So in order to better understand this baffling scene, I turn to the charming Curt Kentner of local label Magic Marker Records. The self-proclaimed “King of Twee,” (seriously, the vanity plate of his PT Cruiser is TWEEKNG, although that could mean “tweaking,” I’m not sure) Kentner volunteered his writing skills to explain to us all why tonight’s show by Melbourne, Australia’s The Lucksmiths is the can’t miss concert of 2007.
My friend Ezra asked me to write a few words about The Lucksmiths for tonight’s show. Sure he used flattery, but I would have done it either way.I la la love The Lucksmiths. So much so I volunteered my wife to go pick them up at the train station which they should be getting here about now. The word that comes to mind to describe The Lucksmiths is CHARMING.The Billy Bragg-style lyrics combined with the Housemartins’ hooks is just the start. They catch you completely off guard and will instantly turn you into a Lucksmith fanatic. Marty’s heartbreaking turn of phrases combined with Tali’s crooner vocals will have you trying to buy merch halfway through the second song. Mark’s bass playing and snappy stage banter will have you wearing the tour shirt you just bought by the fourth song. Louie’s guitar and tough guy good looks will have you volunteering to have your wife pick them up at the train station for the next show.
See you there!
