I’m currently parked outside the Salem home of Marylin Shannon, spokesperson for the chief referendum petitioners who’d like to nuke the two recently passed gay rights laws. I figured it would be more interesting to wait here until they load up the minivans with petitions, and embark on an anti-gay pride parade to the elections office. So far, it’s boring. The petitioners are inside, likely tallying up their signatures and doing the math to predict whether they have enough of a buffer to score 55,179 valid signatures. (For what it’s worth, my math says they need over 75,000 to be safe.)
referendum petitioners who’d like to nuke the two recently passed gay rights laws - the two "gay rights laws" were NOT passed by the people of the state, but by a handful of Democrats catering to a special interest group.
The anti-heterosexual crowd hates the idea of something like this going to the voters, gee - wonder why?
Could it be if the voters had their say the handful of Democrats that cater to special interest groups would be overturned?
Power to da People!
aka, "We The People", NOT "We The special interest group"
Because "right-wing bigots" isn't a special interest group?
Nope Not any more Than Left wing Bigots and you will notice I did not use The Cutsey Quotation Marks
a handful of Democrats catering to a special interest group
Umm, weren't they passed by a majority vote in both houses?
And wait Scott! Could it also possibly be true that the majority of members that it took to pass these bills were possibly also elected by the majority of the voters in their respective districts?
We the people indeed. It is we the people that elected our representatives in Oregon Government, and it is those same representatives that act on the wishes of their consituents.
didn't we vote on these issues? sorry if i'm wrong here.
measure 9 - way back in the early 90s
and
measure 13 - late 90s
they both had been brought up by the same group and tried to get descrimination to be passed by the public at large, not the restore america though... dang my bad memory, i was too young to vote at both times.
sorry to take up the space. but wanted to mention that.
Aaagh. What is wrong with people. Anti-Heterosexual? Please.
The reason I don't want it going to the voters is NOT because I'm afraid of the results, I just don't want to have to wait eleven months longer for my basic civil rights.
