IT’S NOT GRAFFITI, YOU MORON: It’s ART…
The Portland Business Alliance’s Clean & Safe program plans to pay a visit, along with Central Precinct graffiti cop Matt Miller, to Art Media in advance of its weekend “Paint Off Block Party—a Spray paint demonstration by emerging Portland artists,” this Saturday, October 13, outside, on 9th SW Yamhill:
Join local artists in an all day live spray paint demonstration of Montana Spray Paint, sponsored by Art Media. 5 local artists will paint on mounted panels outside of Art Media, joined by local Dj’s (Atom13 and Prophet Noize) and other members of the community.“The problem is that even when these are legitimate events, they attract taggers,” said Marcia Denis, of the City’s graffiti abatement program, at a meeting of the downtown Public Safety Action Committee this morning.
“The day after one of these events, the graffiti calls go up in a five-block radius,” said John Hren, Chief Executive of Portland Patrol, Inc—the private security firm that contracts with the PBA to do order maintenance in the downtown core. “And this event is right opposite the Max.”
“How about we form a little mini-coalition and go and have a meeting with them? And just tell them a little information,” said Bill Sinnott, director of the PBA’s downtown Clean & Safe program, to universal agreement. (Sinnott used to be the Commander of the Police Bureau’s traffic division. He’s a nice guy. There’s a building named after his family on Burnside, and a photo of him dressed in SWAT gear, holding a machine gun, on the 11th floor of the Police Bureau building on SW 2nd.)
How exciting for Art Media! I wonder how they feel about being targeted like this by some of the city’s private-sector heavy-hitters, backed up by a city police officer? I hope they enjoy their visit. And Art Media, if you fancy having a reporter in the room when that discussion takes place, I’d be delighted. You might also consider calling an attorney. graffiti helps create jobs
if you stop the graffiti, the terrorist have already won.
actually, this is challenging. They are creating an outlet for the taggers which is better than the taggers picking a building. But it could be construed that this even is a gateway toward vandalism.
art media, just like a head shop?
No! Art Media is a highbrow, chi-chi operation, selling paint for $8.80 a can. They're more boutique than shop.
Boutique? Art Media is just like every other art supply store in the nation, with their crappy books about figure drawing and hot glue guns and gum erasers and T-squares and on and on and on. I wouldn't call it a boutique by a long shot.
If art is outlawed, only outlaws will have art.
City - let's see the data on tags around art events. Maybe that was true with Pokerface in the inner Southeast. Elsewhere - prove it.
Tags and art are two separate things.
there's an art media on 82nd, i think.
i think it'd be better to arrest all the taggers after a graffiti expo at "i've been framed" on 52nd and powell.

Chas, you're right. I was using the term "boutique" to differentiate Art Media from, I don't know, a thrift store. But to describe it that way does injustice to all the boutiques us hipsters love to shop in. And I think I prefer your take on it.
thanks, i havent had the stuff since new american casuals (pokerface) closed down last year.
i paint bikes and tshirts, not walls.
And sniff the stuff, of course. Email us photos of your work! mdavis@portlandmercury.com
“The problem is that even when these are legitimate events, they attract taggers,”
And the Rose Festival attracts child molesters, let's ban the Rose festival!
Oh jeez...I'm helping organize this event for Art Media, as a demonstration of spray paint art from some good local kids. Now I feel the torch wielding business community descending upon us. Woe is me!!! I think we all know that art and tagging are two different things. I hope there is a mob, especially since the graffitti abatement folks at the city wouldn't even call us back after repeated calls. Blah blah. I think banning Rose Festival is a great idea, I'm a little tired of fat Gresham kids in Spuds McKenzie shirts. xo
If the taggers tag everything in a five-block radius right after the event, why not dispatch cops to a five-block radius and arrest Portland's tagging problem away in just one evening?
