Didn’t know we had an office in Bend? Us either! Thankfully, the venerated New York Times has finally let us know:
Nike Adds Indian Artifacts to Its SwooshBy ANDREW ADAM NEWMAN
Published: October 3, 2007When Nike recently introduced a shoe designed specifically for American Indians, the company said it was to promote a healthy lifestyle on reservations.
Sam McCracken, a Nike manager, with the Air Native N7. A podiatrist’s prompting helped spur the development of the shoe.
But along with its trademark swoosh, the Nike Air Native N7 features feathers and arrowheads, which bloggers have found off-putting.
“If this isn’t an example of corporate manipulation of race, I don’t know what is,” wrote one of about 200 readers commenting online about an article that appeared in The Rapid City Journal in South Dakota. There, the response to the article was split.
“What makes this a ridiculously bad move is decorating it ‘Native American style,’” added a reader identified as “la foi,” on the Web site of The Portland Mercury, an alternative weekly near Nike headquarters in Bend, Ore.
Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to Mt. Bachelor.
actually, they're reading la foi's copy. Don't get too excited, Matt.
I, of course, blame myself. I commented negatively on said shoes, with a hyperlink to my own blog, which features a shot of the welcome sign at Mt. Bachelor, suggesting that though I explicitly state that I live in Portland, I also live near that mountain, outside of Bend.
I apologize for the confusion, NYT.
OK, as the person who wrote that: Yes I could have phrased that much more elegantly so the mockery is deserved. But, in my defense, since Portland is in your publication’s name, I thought it would be more clear, like saying, to use an example on this coast, “The Boston Globe, a daily newspaper near the Harvard Campus in Cambridge, Mass.”
But that doesn’t look so great either, so I’m dangling a modifier or something. Sorry.
Andrew,
Nike isn't headquartered in Bend. Oregon is a much bigger state than you on the East Coast are used to. Bend is not a suburb of Portland but its own city located over 3 hours drive from Portland. Did you mean to write Beaverton instead of Bend? That would make more sense, and would fit your Boston/Cambridge analogy better.
Cool of you to comment, Andrew, but r is right. There's a whole mountain range between here and Bend, where Nike is not headquartered.
In the author's defence, Nike headquarters is nearer to Bend than say New York or Dehli.
As a native american with the majority of my family being diabetics, I am very proud of the fact that "Nike" took the time to come up with such a product. I don't like the fact that one individual can speak for all native americans, nor can they decide what is right or wrong for the majority of native americans. There are numerous companys out there who also benefit from making clothing and other products with Native American logos on them. Why is one person trying to down a major brand name for using logos!!!! Come on their are more important issues out in the world to argue about and get upset about then a logo on a "SHOE" come on! I for one am not going to set back and try to boycott or talk negatively about all hundreds or thousands of other clothing or shoe companies out there....I dont have the time, someone with that much time on their hands should really invest their time in somthing that is going to benefit thier tribe positively...
