It’s been 25 years since the release of Blade Runner, Ridley Scott’s science fiction cult film turned classic, but only now has his original vision reached the screen.

Blade Runner: The Final Cut—as the definitive director’s cut is titled—was scheduled to play at the New York Film Festival Saturday night, opens at the Ziegfeld in New York and the Landmark in Los Angeles on Friday, and comes out in December in a five-disc set with scads of extra features.

An earlier director’s cut played in theaters 15 years ago to great fanfare and is still available on DVD. But the new one is something different: darker, bleaker, more beautifully immersive.

The Times has a great story on the new treatment that one of my favorite films, Blade Runner, is getting thanks to director Ridley Scott. Details on what we can expect to be different with The Final Cut are here. (This, along with the news of Radiohead’s new album, is making me pretty goddamn happy at the moment.)

Important: If you haven’t seen Blade Runner (wha?), or if you want to be surprised by the upcoming DVD, beware, as spoilers abound in the article. Including, yes, the answer to The Big Question About Deckard.

Comments

Deckard is made out of PEOPLE.

Except the opposite of that.

Sean Young is another one of those 80's chicks that was hot but you couldn't explain how or why. Sorta like Sigourney Weaver.

Not sure why they're making such a big deal out of the origami unicorn scene. It's in the Director's Cut already.

ridley scott cut blade runner + new radio head = fucking sweet

There's also a great breakdown of Blade Runner in the new Wired...

I just hope there's gonna be a Portland screening. I still haven't ever managed to see this movie on a big screen, despite being a huge fan of it.
