Music Pinback - Tonight!

The kids, they love them some Pinback. Me? Not so much. But, while I give the entity of Pinback a solid “meh,” I do adore their members other projects.

You see, in San Diego music history (this is important to learn since the city will be little more than a smoldering pile of ashes in a few days), three of the most storied bands from the ’90s (Three Mile Pilot, Boilermaker and Heavy Vegetable) were all building blocks toward the formation of Pinback.

Three Mile Pilot split evenly in two, forming the morose Black Heart Procession while the quirky rhythm section moved on to create Pinback. TMP were the kings of San Diego underground music, known for their rare, but always amazing, live shows, inventive song structure and unique album packaging (sewn burlap sacks for record sleeves, propeller-shaped vinyl, etc).

Heavy Vegetable was one of many projects from Rob Crow, the frighteningly prolific singer who now pays his bills via his work in Pinback. Much like their later incarnation, Thingy, HV were not quite like any other band of that era, as they reflected the odd and confusing personality of Crow.

Then there was Boilermaker. Criminally underrated, this bass-heavy trio led by Terrin Durfey paved the way for a generation of modern day emo bands (back when that wasn’t a bad word) who borrow liberally from their introspective sound. Meanwhile Durfey has battled cancer on and off for the past few years and is currently undergoing Chemotherapy treatments while on tour with Pinback.

Pinback performs tonight at the Roseland Theater.

That's a lovely history lesson, Ezra.

I will add that, having opened for them at the Casbah in SD once, they are crazy nice folks. Like, maybe the nicest band I've ever opened for.

Thanks for your sensitivity to our situation here in San Diego.

SD Dialed In, I have a mom who is sleeping on a friend's floor in Leucadia right now because her Encinitas home has been evacuated, so I assure you I am sensitive to the SD fire issue. This post was about music, and despite my little "pile of ashes comment," I don't want to turn this into a fire discussion. For those, you can scroll down to yesterday's posts.

Could you maybe post one song from Pinback. I realize you don't like them, but we don't live in San Diego. We don't live in San Diego. We don't live in San Diego. We don't live in San Diego. We don't live in San Diego.

Didn't you get the memo, Michael?
Portland no longer has any musical history of note, aside from the occasional nod to the obvious like Elliott Smith.
All references to music and/or musicians must now run through the central office in So. Cal.:)

This is the second time Ive seen Pinback on this tour as well as seeing Heavy Vegetable back in the day (obvious name dropping) and honestly I thought the show sucked.

They seemed insulted to be there, complaining about everything from the sound system, to the security guards, video taping in the audience, to their own band member walking behind them on stage. Nevermind their sped up versions of their most notable songs but the 1 song encore was the biggest FU of all.

looking forward to drinking some koolaid at the Polyphonic Spree show tomorrow to try and forget that experience.

Huh? Complain about him being too socal and request a pinback song? You know they arent a portland band right?
