Portland Thus Spake MAX

On the blue line MAX today, as it crossed the river, the driver announced the time, temperature, welcomed me to downtown, and encouraged me to “stay warm and dry.” Everyone paused in their conversation and listened politely, it was strange.
Are all the trains doing this now, or did I just have an overzealous driver? If it’s a new policy it seems a little pandery/over-eager (“tourists… LOVE US”), but I guess it’s nice to feel welcomed.

I had this happen last week coming through the tunnel from Beaverton. Very odd. Only once though.

i got it going east across the river a couple weeks ago. weird. there were a few snickers.

honestly I think it is kind of cool. whats wrong with being polite? Portland used to have a lot more of it.

I don't have a problem with it...I think it's kind of out of place though. When they do it on an airplane, it makes sense. I just came from thousands of miles away and have little idea what the time and/or temperature is. Coming on the MAX into Portland? I'm good thanks.

As for politeness...I'd be frightened if PDX got any more polite. The friendliness around here still catches me off guard sometimes...but that's probably 'cause I came from New York...

I believe it is a specific operator. I too have heard it and it was a breath of fresh air on a normally mundane max ride.

Deep,
look around sometime and notice how many Oregonians dont wear watches. someone announcing the time and wishing well is not a horrid thing, its a good thing, trust me.
