Politics Anybody Want to Make the Case for Going to War with Iran?

Posted by Amy J. Ruiz on Fri, Nov 16 at 4:19 PM

We’d love to do this month’s Debate Club on whether going to war with Iran is a good idea or not—and it’s damn easy to find someone in Portland who’ll make the case that we shouldn’t pull another Iraq.

But, surprise, surprise, finding someone like John Bolton—someone who can articulate why, exactly, the Bush Administration would like to bomb Iran—here in Little Beirut is quite difficult. We’ve tried the local Republicans, PSU’s brain trust, and we’re hoping for a call back from a national group that wants regime change in Iran. So far, no luck. Leads appreciated…

A high-ranking Iranian leader told members of Britain's Parliament at a peace conference in May that gays deserve to be executed or tortured ...
public hangings and the brutal suppression of young people and women across Iran ...
Iran's president broadcasts Holocaust denial internationally ...
Iran Iraq war children used to clear minefields by walking ahead of Iranian troops to detonate mines ...
No question there should be regime change in Iran, but it is NOT our job - war with Iran would only empower the religious fundamentalists on both sides of the conflict. I vote for death cage match between Pat Robertson and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and I'd piss on both their corpses

US shot down Iranian airliner inside Iranian airspace and then tried to blame the victims.

US funded, supported, armed and covered up for Saddam Hussein as he gassed the Kurds and over 100,000 Iranians.

US armed, trained and supported nun-raping death squads in Central and South America.

President Bush has explicitly threatened Iran with a nuclear first strike in blatant violation of international law.

US is directly responsible for the deaths of over 500,000 children in Iraq just due to the pre-invasion sanctions. Since then, the figure is over a million dead Iraqi children alone.

Care to compare which regime is worse some more?

US arms, backs and supports a racist apartheid state called Israel which espouses ethnic cleansing and shells Palestinian families as they picnic on beaches.

go hass go

Amy, what about contacting the Political Science departments at some of the other area colleges like Lewis & Clark, Reed, UofP, Concordia etc. Maybe I'm stereotyping (fine, I am), but it seems like maybe one of the religious colleges in town ought to have a conservative political scientist or middle east historian on faculty. And what about seeing if the World Affairs Council can shake someone out of a tree for ya?

In the meantime, we can all enjoy hass' wonderfully nuanced analysis.

Thanks, Cary!

Try sending an email to Mark Penn. He'll hook you up.

Try a "poly sci" professor from one of the local fundamentalist christian colleges, like George Fox in Newburg or that weird Cascadia College up on SE Burnside and 92nd -- you know: Christians LOVE war, it should be easy to find someone to support the "pro invasion" stance towards Iran at a christian church or college campus....

hilarious: I didn't see Cary's comment until after mine posted....but we think alike! Cary had the original (and good) idea to go to the christians....you want the "hate point-of-view"? Always seek Jesus' followers for that perspective! Jackpot!
