Remember that Immigration and Customs Enforcement raid at the North Portland Del Monte plant back in June? 160 people were detained, and many of them were deported, leaving family behind—family who can’t exactly score a job at the Del Monte plant (or anywhere else, unless they’ve got the right paperwork), but still have bills to pay.
In a stroke of delicious brilliance, they’re selling tamales to pay the rent. Order them by tomorrow, pick them up on Friday. Yum!

Eww..I hope they all have "Food Handler" cards but some how I doubt it. I see major toilet time coming for anyone who eats that crap.
That is a really rude thing to say, "Ewwww". Would you say that to your grandmother if she served you up a plate of homemade food?
Don't mind me. I'm an idiot. Seriously.
like it or not, its the truth la foi. mexican food, due to its spicy nature often causes upset tummies to begin with. then when you add in things like people who are not used to cooking in mass quantities and may or may not be cooking in a kitchen that can maintain good health standards (usually you get stomach issues from food carts because of their inability to keep food at the proper temperature)...
ouch
The comments in this thread are enough to make me hurl. These will most likely be the tastiest and the cleanest tamales in town. I've eaten from food carts (here and in Mexico) that are most likely maintaining better health standards than plenty of restaurants. Take a looksy at the brilliant show Restaurant Nightmares with Gordon Ramsey and you can see how clean your dining establishments are. Or you can review the records online of Multnomah County Health Department.
What I want to know is the difference between the two tamales offered. Yum!
One difference is that Guatemalan tamales are steamed in banana leaves, while the northern versions use corn husks.
I wondered that, too—I'm only familiar with the Mexican ones, which we have for xmas eve every year. In a brief google exploration, I discovered that the Guatemalan ones have different masa, can have things like olives and plums inside (yum!) are wrapped in banana leaves, and are larger.
A woman rolls through here with a cart full of home made tamales every Friday. They are delicious.
Mexican style tamales are one of my favorite things to eat - when they're made right. I think I'll have to try the Guatemalan ones & see how they compare.
Homemade Mexican tamales rock. Aiding and abetting illegal aliens, not so much.
Ssshhhhh...I have a secret tamale hook up named Clara. She lives somewhere here in North Portland and every few weeks on Sunday mornings she stops by our house to sell us 2 bags of The.Best.Tamales.Ever. And very affordable.
I contacted them, they have both veggie & chicken tamales. Yay!
Kyle: 1) Please note that if the "illegal aliens" haven't yet been deported as a result of the raid, it's because the US Department of Justice has found a reason for them to stay at least long enough to defend their cases in our courts. Buying the tamales that you consider so delicious is assisting a deserving immigrant with expensive legal fees and immense hurdles yet to overcome. 2) How would you have ever learned about the deliciousness of said tamales if not for immigrants bringing them to this lovely city? 3) Prick.

Lelo: "These will most likely be the tastiest and the cleanest tamales in town." do you have any reasoning for this, or is this hyperbole?...idiot...
Jones: 1) Racist 2) Racist 3) Racist (to keep in a theme)
thanks la foi! i'm gonna get me some!
Yeah! Razor Wire called me an idiot! Yeah!!!!!!!
Do you have any reasoning for your gum flappin' or is this hyperbole?
I will buy a ton of these if they were using the cash to send themselves back to Mexico.
Buying tamales to help "these people" (yep, I said it) stay in this country and continue to attempt to push their RACIST agendas onto the Portland city council and North Portland people (HELLO....Interstate Ave. debacle)is laughable.
Those tamales may be tasty, but they cost us a hell of a lot more than 20 bucks a dozen.

Thanks for the heads up on this, Amy! My whole office is going in on a giant communal order, and are delighted to help out and get good food, too.
Is it ok if I send this link out to other groups? Is that good blog manners? Thanks Amy. BTW have you read Sean Cruz latest blog. Very well written words.
Now to order my tamales,
For sure! Send out the link (or the info and email address), so they can sell lots of tamales. I ordered two dozen, and can't wait.
If they are here illegally, then why help? Its not like they are getting persecuted in Mexico. Go home!
I wonder how much of this income they get will be taxed? Oh wait, none! Let em just keep taking.
I just ate two of these delicious tamales. Perfectly flavored, light masa, blended with spices, tender meat in the middle...yum, is right.
Despite all the rhetoric, here's the deal: there are people, fellow humans, who are in need of help. Leave your racist rants at the door, be a neighbor and help. If you want to follow through on your stance to not fund the lives of illegal immigrants, don't purchase most of the food sold at your local big supermarket. Face it, immigration, legal or illegal is a fact of life in America.
As a Native American, I could easily hold the opinion that everyone needs to go home. I could live a life filled with bitterness, gnashing my teeth at all who are non-Native. Rather, I appreciate the diversity that immigrants have brought to our nation. Have you ever seen a harder working group of folks, doing the work in our country that our own fellow country persons won't do? And now you have the audacity to criticize their efforts to eke out a living?
As a former longtime restaurant manager in both Oregon and Washington, I can attest that the conditions and preparations I witnessed at the pickup site were well within health code, and even though I didn't ask all the tamale makers to produce their food handlers' cards, I would bet that many of them do possess such cards if they were previously employed in the Del Monte food packing plant. Your "yuck" insinuations at their preparations smacks at an underlying assumption that immigrants are dirty and disgusting. I find that position disgusting.
Step out of your xenophobic bubbles, enjoy the diversity of life, help your fellow human being...simply put, how hard is it to eat a damn tamale?
