News Good Morning, News!

Posted by The Unpaid Intern on Fri, Nov 30 at 9:44 AM

A hurricane in Oregon? That’s what might hit us this weekend, forecasters say. And weather forecasters are always right.

In Illinois, police sergeant Drew Peterson is under suspicion for the disappearance of his wife. Police had been called to Peterson’s house 18 times for domestic disturbance between Peterson and his previous wife (who died mysteriously), but Peterson was never arrested. Residents think the cops were protecting Peterson and are to blame for the disappearance of Peterson’s latest wife.

In Sudan, protestors call for an execution of the British schoolteacher who allowed her class of 7-year-olds to name a teddy bear Muhammad.

As the writers strike continues, O’Brien says he’ll pay his staff out of his own pocket next week so they won’t be laid off.

I love the way the news media likes to write terse titles that problems seem bigger then they are and it's interesting to see the Mercury do the same thing. "In Sudan, protestors call for an execution...". I'm sure there are quite a few saying stupid crap like that but I have a hard time believing it's an accurate depiction of all people there. I mean, it's like titling an article "Americans Commit Suicide In Anticipation of Approaching Comet".

Rumor has it Jon Stewart has been paying the staffs of both the Daily Show and the Colbert Report out of his own pocket.

Don't take the hurricane threat too lightly. I was a little kid during the Columbus day storm and my Dad and I were out in the woods near Sandy, Oregon when it hit. That was a night I will never forget.

Did you guys see the hilarious video of Drew Peterson's counterattack against the press from a couple days ago? He walked out of his house with a video camera and pointed it at the reporters while they were asking questions. "Why don't you see how you like it," he said, as if that was some sort of effective defense.

A little bit of context--the Chicago suburb known as Bolingbrook has been flooded with money and development in recent years. And, as in all things Chicago, this wealth led to shady political things. (See Chicago magazine's article about the Mayor of Bolingbrook from the October issue.) I have no doubt this Peterson thing is only the tip of the iceberg.
