Politics Marta Guembes on the 4th Avenue Proposal

Posted by Amy J. Ruiz on Thu, Nov 15 at 11:57 AM

Marta Guembes, co-chair of the César E. Chávez Committee, is “insulted” that four commissioners have agreed to rename 4th Avenue instead of Interstate.

“It’s very insulting,” she says. “They have not called me to let me know they’re working on this.” She found out by reading the paper this morning.

“We proposed Interstate, after we went through many streets to decide what would work for us, and the Latino community.” This new idea, she says, is “these white men who have the power and are telling us what is best for us.”

And she’s sticking to her guns—she wants a vote on the street that the committee proposed, Interstate.

Comments

Marta Guembes is sounding much like a racist with comments such as as "these white men who have the power".
How dare she insult a group of people because of skin color.

What's that brown lady's problem? It seems like a good idea.

Someone call the "waaaa-mbulance," and quick!

discrimination
Definition: Treatment or consideration based on class or category rather than individual merit; partiality or prejudice

(was Marta expecting this???)

racism
Definition: The belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others; discrimination or prejudice based on race

I have to agree, she is definitely going down in my book as one very angry racist....not really who I would want speaking on my behalf if I were Latino. She is just making enemies.

Isn't this just a small group of Latino activists deciding what's best for everyone else?

Man, I wish we could get past all this ethnic identity bullshit and just celebrate the individual.

It's really sad she has to break out the race card at every moment. If you don't want to rename Interstate you're a racist, if you want to name another street you're a racist. She should be happy they're naming a street at all after the way that committee has acted.

“They have not called me to let me know they’re working on this.” Hmm... Just like the renaming committee didn't call anyone along Interstate to let them know they working to rename the street.

For the committee members to be insulted by the 4th Ave proposal is insane, and lowers their credibility even further. The city should simply refuse to take any further meetings with them.

No matter what this is still about the City Council and Mayor IGNORING the LAW (17.93). They are not the ones who direct the process - that's what the LAW is for. I hope someone sues.

[breathes deeply and controls impulses] I have nothing to say on this issue.

sounds like someone needs a nap and some warm chocolate chip cookies.

Matt, you never have.

Marta Guembes, esa puta esta loca!

Marta Guembes, esa puta esta loca!

Marta Guembes, esa puta esta loca!

Honestly, that's not fair. She might be a silly, crazy bigot who cries like a baby when she doesn't get her way, but I don't recall hearing anything about her working as a prostitute. If anyone is a puta or puto here, it's these guilt-ridden wealthy whites in Portland's corrupt government who simply bend over for any and all "oppressed" minorities who come their way with a sob story and an agenda.

Take a trip with the "Oregon Trail" out to the Gateway Winco, or any other grocery store in East County. Observe how the population explosion of the Master Race (La Raza) is being subsidized. Head on down to any of our social service agencies, and watch the same transfer of wealth take place before your very eyes.

Are these people, many of them not even citizens of this country, paying for any of the food they eat or medical care they receive ?

Oppressed, my working-class white redneck ass. You now have a main street downtown, in addition to a huge percentage of our tax money.

What do you not want ?

I feel compelled to add that I was actually excited to read the news at first, thinking, wow, downtown will start to be like it is back home, with a huge Latino presence.

Then I got to the part about this cadre of card-carrying bigots literally turning their backs on the city in protest.

That street runs through the seat of regional Government, with a G. At the rate that your beloved La Raza is reproducing, you see that as not enough ? Damn. It's as if I never worked for and next to Latinos, and I now see the way you look at my skin quite clearly.

what gets me is that every year Jobs With Justice and Voz (day labor union types) put on a May Day march that goes past city hall on 4th ave. it will be cool as f*ck to have that march turn on to Cezar E Chavez Avenue and march past City Hall!
I for one would think that it is a good sign that "the city that works" is willing to name the street in front of city hall after a labor leader.

I have a bussiness on interstate Ave. The committee never called to let me know that they were ever in the process to have a name change. No one ever wanted anything to do with interstate when it was infested with hookers and drug dealers. Now when they see a change for the good they want to rename interstate ave. I am a person of color. I have been called a racist.

I'm a person with Latino heritage but I have to say that Ms. Guembes doesn't speak for me and I find her behavior outrageous. Her behavior is petty and her motives are suspect.
