Fashion This Is England—But Where are the Clothes?

Posted by Matt Davis on Wed, Nov 28 at 5:42 PM

Is it just me, or is there a resurgence of cinematic interest in the battle over fascism in punk and post-punk Britain, lately? The recent Joe Strummer documentary, followed by This is England, have both focused at length on the efforts of the National Front in my homeland to capture young hearts and minds during the country’s lowest economic point for decades. This is England makes the point clearer: The mid ’70s British skinhead movement started out, and still does contain, a hearty anti-racist message. Anyway enough of all that. I’m talking about the CLOTHES. this%20is%20england%20march.jpg
THIS IS ENGLAND: JUST LOOK AT THAT SHIRT…

Does anybody know where I can buy Ben Sherman or Fred Perry clothing here in Portland? If not, with all the vintage stores around, I think I’ve spotted a retailing opportunity.

I've seen Ben Sherman at Norstrom and Blake on NE 23rd. It seems like I've seen it elsewhere but I can't recall off-hand, maybe Ipnosi?

That would be NW 23rd. Note to self: Preview is your friend.

Also, Nordstrom. Wait, didn't you just say you shop there? It's been a while since I've gone hunting for Ben Sherman, but I know I bought a shirt there.

Try a fetish shop, that's the only place selling that look anymore. Ever seen No Skin off my Ass?

Racist!

Anyone wanna fight me?

Mario's has some Fred Perry, but it ain't cheap.

I want me some Fred Perry too, but man, at those prices, wow. That's an expensive way to relive my early teen days of self-pegged jeans and Bad Manners. I only had one white Fred Perry polo at the time that I had found at a thrift store for $5.

The Black Cat, a coffee/wi-fi shop on 13th/Alberta, interestingly enough, has a selection of Ben Sherman shirts available for sale - or they used to last time I was there (it's been nearly 2 years).

Go to Beulahland on the first Friday of December.

For the record, that wasn't me challenging people to a fight. But what's this Beulahland?

I've found ebay is really good for Bangkok knock-offs. But that's illegal. And I'd feel bad, doing it.

"Go to Beulahland on the first Friday of December"

WIN!!!

Skinheads, smoke dope !
That ain't no fuckin' joke !
You are a stupid bloke !
Skiiiiiiinheads, smoke dope !

Beaulahland is packed full of "anti-racist" skinheads, who remind me in every way of the Nazi skinheads that used to wreak havoc in the punk scene in my home town in the 1980's. You know, beating the shit out of people they cannot understand, 5 guys on one, that kind of thing. Bunch of repressed homosexual cowards, if you ask me. Right after I finally moved here, fall of 2001, the local Nazis were supposed to be meeting downtown somewhere. The Rose City SHARP boys went downtown looking for some Nazis to beat up, but couldn't find any. So they settled for my friend Jason, who worked on-and-off at Satyricon, and had a newborn infant child to feed.

His crime ? He was a white heavy-metal fan from Texas with dreadlocks.

I remember looking at the puddles of his blood on the sidewalk, after a pack of them put him is the ICU.

Fuckin' skinheads, I hate 'em. One of the reasons I am armed. Brainless, violent cowards, every last one of them. Shortly after that incident, my friend Damian, a guy from Tijuana who bartended at the Jockey Club, called one of the participants of the Satyricon boot party out in public, humiliating him. It was hilarious.

This fine lookin' bunch of lads make the cast of deliverance look like supermodels.

Other than maybe one night a month--if that--I don't know that I've seen too many skinheads ever in Beulahland in recent times.

Any self-respecting male over 18 who dresses that way, listens to that intolerably shitty music, and surrounds themselves with a like-minded pack of sub-moron IQ closet cases should be shot.

Seriously.

Skinheads--more like shitheads.

Bonus points to you, Cabbie for the Fang reference. I almost forgot about those guys.

The complex history and social nuances of skinheads is a bit different than here in Portland Matt. Be a bit careful if you do decide to suddenly change your look.

The experience and memory of many in Portland regarding our once fairly strong and quite violent white supremist skinhead movement is still there for many. A gang of them killed an African immigrant and it put Portland in the national spotlight for a long time, giving our city a reputation as a white-supremist center. In addition, I do remember several other skinheads in the music scene being complete wankers to deal with on all levels.

I've always admired the look though. Super practical for our climate especially with the boots. It's really just one or two steps removed from a Paul Bunyan look if you think about it. Perhaps you should bring that look back?
Not so into the female skinhead version of fashion though, especially the hairdos. I pretty much wore combat boots, fishnets, and short kilts all through highschool, but just couldn't stand to shave my head and dye my hair and have a little rat tail or something.
