If there’s one thing London does more evocatively than any other city I’ve been to, it’s fog. Fog, or rather smog—a mixture of fog and coal smoke—killed 4,000 people in London in just four days in December 1952, leading to the coining of the term “pea-souper,” named after the particular kind of yellow-green, thick fog that used to envelop the city. These days, things are less toxic. But there’s still a definite Sweeney Todd feel to the city in late December.
