« Good Morning, News! | Main | Th!nkfilm Continues to Mess With My Head »
Having set my favorite sweater alight on Saturday, I’m now in the market for a new one. Mercury arts editor Chas Bowie and I are in agreement: A good sweater can raise a man’s general attractiveness by up to 30 percentage points. So where should I go to buy a new one? Criteria: It has to be close to downtown—no suburban outlets, and it has to be open tonight, after work. Bonus points if it’s non-flammable. Thanks.
MY OLD SWEATER: Gone straight to hell…
Feel free to email jpgs to mdavis@portlandmercury.com, and I’ll post them here after the jump.
I'm in the market for a cashmere sweater too, but I don't think I can justify dropping $600+ at Mario's.
I just bought a grey vneck with darker grey elbow patches (elbow patches!)for my husband -30 bucks at Macy's and Frank.
hi matt-
i'd start by checking nordstrom rack. though it's usually a schlock fest of oversize ralph lauren gear, you will occassionally find something really nice. maybe even from ralph lauren.
also, i'm not sure if they've got any sweaters, but you should always go to denwave. every day. of your life.
Denwave, eh? I'll try Nordstrom.
By the way, it was a wool sweater, it caught on fire resting on a heater at the Teacup Nordic cross country ski club on Saturday. Thanks to the guy next to me for all the sympathy: "Take that outside, like, right now," was just what I needed to hear after losing my favorite pullover.
Macy's has been selling the same basic v-neck wool sweater for the last 50 years. They are great quality and last forever. J Crew usually has a good selection as well (especially if you are the rust orange or pea green type).
I forget if Ptown has either of these downtown, if that's where I would try first.
Macy's is downtown. Although I won't be trying to walk out the door with any of their perfume testers while sweater shopping!

i don't think anybody wants to believe they are in the market for a $600 sweater. it's the confidence that you get knowing you're wearing $600. especially if it was hard earned money. plus, show me something i can wear 9 months of the year (in oregon, in a good color)...
I saw one of those perfume tester girls at macy's the other day. She was about 6'2" and gorgeous. Swing on by there if you're in the area.
Macy's? Nordstrom? GROSS. If you must patronize a chain establishment, go to Goodwill (there's a "fancy" one downtown, right across the street from the library). There's plenty of cashmere and merino sweaters to be found for a pittance—my man routinely comes home with such scores.
If you're feeling a bit less of a cheapskate, but not quite flush enough for Mario's (they're having a sale, BTW), try a broken spoke on 23rd and Savier—the designer, John Blasioli, showed sweaters in his most recent collection.
Goodwill it is, then, I suppose.
My guy got an incredible cashmere sweater at Rerun on 7th. And the owners don't take the same salary that the Goodwill mucky mucks get. Buy local, think global.
a bit late, but j crew has nice wool sweaters. i got one a week ago on sale for $40. last year i got a good one at express. yeah chains suck, but so does goodwill if you are looking for something specific, esp in this town.
