« Happy New Year | Main | UPDATE: With Sten Out, Brendan Finn In the Race »
We got wind of this yesterday, but City Commissioner Erik Sten didn’t return our call to confirm the rumor and his chief of staff denied any knowledge of it—he’s leaving city politics by April 1, as he tells WW today. The departure of Portland’s most veteran commissioner will certainly shake things up—it creates another open seat, which might alleviate pressure from the currently packed open race for the seat Sam Adams is vacating to run for mayor. And the city council next year will now look quite different, regardless of whether or not Adams secures the mayoral seat—two out of the five seats will be filled by newcomers to the city council.
From WW’s interview:
You just got re-elected in 2006. Why quit now? When I ran in ’06, I made my priorities putting the homeless plan in place and finishing reform of the Portland Development Commission. Those things are all at a pretty good spot now. I’ve been feeling like it’s time for me to make a change. Sometimes decisions line up with life and cycles and elections. But in this case they didn’t.
I’m off to city hall—more on this later!
That chatter at the beginning of the taped interview where he talks about who he can trust is the best part. He can trust Potter and Saltzman. Randy "can't help himself... I mean, he doesn't blog drunk anymore, but..." And Sam needs favor from the reporters, so he can't be trusted. Then he says he can't trust "Rich" on his staff and will have to tell him midnight before WWeek goes to print... who is Rich?
Then he mentions he wanted to go to WWeek (instead of presumably the Oregonian) for selfish reasons because he wants to embarass someone whose name I can't make out?
The person he dislikes is The Snore opinion editor. Maybe he is the former editor of that section. Anyway, Sten points the guy out in the print interview.
Sad day for city politics IMO. Sten was the only sharp guy on the council.
Questions:
1.Who's running for Sten's seat?
2.Are they credible?
3.Someone call Marc Jolin from JOIN and ask if he's got his 1000 signatures yet.
4.What does this mean for urban renewal, the homeless access center in Old Town, and all manner of other projects Sten's been pushing over the last 6 months?
5.Where does Jim Middaugh get off, denying all knowledge on the telephone? Cheeky cheeky monkey!
Matt: If you listen to the beginning of the interview I mentioned before, you can hear him claim he probably won't tell anyone until 11pm Tuesday night because he was worried about leaks. So it's certainly possible Jim didn't know?
It's also possible Elvis Presley is alive and dating my mum.
This is sad news for Portland. Erik Sten was the least patriarchal of the all male city council revue. I even found Sam to be deferential to males over any women. I don't consider Sam to be a "diverse candidiate".
On the positive side it is an opportunity for another woman to run for a Council seat. I am a fan of a number of women. While I am not a fan of Maria on County Commission, Maria Rojo de Stefano has already said she wants to take on the the male dominated council. It seems perfect for her to run against the two men who announced today they are running for Erik's seat.
If she actually runs for Sam's seat, I would have to say she is disingenuous in her statement about wanting to run against the all white male Council. If she runs against Amanda Fritz and African American candidate John Branam, she is once again demonstrating thay she is a hypocrite.
Hopefully a woman better then Maria will run, but she is better then Fish. She has a rather poor record on County Commission with her history of fiscal disasters and giving money to questionable organizations and old friends.
Happy New Year everyone!!!

WAKE UP MERCURY REPORTERS!!!!
I want your old editor back that ran for City Council. At least there was a little content in his writing at your paper.
Your kidding right? A staffer running for office from the most dull elected official in the County's History???? We will al fall asleep when we watch Council on TV.
Another insider from City hall??
A white male!!!
A golf playing fancy pants!!!!
Why are you fools in the press not being critical of this deal?
Why don't you just hand the City over to Commissioner Leonard, Adams, and Saltzman.
Who is going back this inexperienced young man? More West Hills families like the Saltzman's, Schnitzer's , Naito's, Goodman's; and corporate america??? More favors for developers. More bad TRAM decisions from a staffer?
Thanks but no thanks!!!!!
Please. Members of the press, dig in and report. This is scary!!! City Council controlled by the classic good old boy system.
As long as it pays my mortgage, Robin, I'll rob from the rich and keep it.
