Film Cloverfield Reactions?

So with a record-breaking January premiere, Cloverfield made a bit of spare change over the weekend. What’d you guys think? There’s been a bit of Blogtown discussion already, and there are obviously my thoughts on the flick, as well as ones like these and these, but I’m curious as to what Blogtown readers thought. I’ve only talked to two or three people about it so far, but all of them liked it a lot. That said, as Blogtown commenter b!X noted earlier, “I’m fairly certain this will be one of those movies which people either like or hate.”

I saw it on Saturday, and while I generally enjoyed it (though not blown away), many in my audience HATED IT. There was actually one guy blowing really loud farts during the quiet parts when the gal was saying, "You came back for me!" Also, after the movie a large group of people were hanging around outside, and were calling it "the worst movie I've ever seen… EVER." And, [Spoiler alert coming! ALERT! ALERT!] "the only thing I liked is that everybody died."

Going to see it tonight. I'm excited to see what Abrams does with it. Or is it Abrhams? Is the H silent? huhu

Saw it. Loved it. Was scared almost the whole way through. The characters getting caught during the military attack on the monster, the subway tunnels, the building rescue, the attack in the park, the helicopter... shit. I bought into it, even as part of my mind noticed little nitpicks, like, damn, that's one sturdy camera. It must be made of the same stuff as the monster appeared to be...

I liked it, everyone I saw it with hated it. They thought the characters were vapid and couldn't get over the fact that Cloverfield is, basically, just another monster movie. I'll admit that. Take away the cool one-camera gimmick and it may as well be the Matthew Broderick-version of Godzilla but with a bleaker ending. There's even little mini-monsters running about.

'twas truly amazing. Balls to the wall and totally terrifying. The clever flashback structure was neat, too. Haunting. Haven't shaken it.

If you loved/hated Cloverfield, you're going to love/hate this even more: the characters have their own MySpace pages. Go ahead, look. You want to. I won't tell anyone:

So now I wonder if they'll have a showing on MyDeathSpace.

Felt like I was watching someone play through the "oops, I have no weapon" level of a first person shooter for an hour and a half. It didn't help that the monster looked like it came straight off of the cover of the Doom 3 box.

The thousands of tiny monsters were a nice touch. I would have liked to see exactly what happened to the bite victims. But I'm splattercore like that. =8)

What happened to the bite victims? Didn't you see that? The Army shoots them in the fucking head!

Anyway, I LOVED this movie. We finally have our own monster movie and maybe even a dynasty a la Gozirra (also known as Godzilla).

Some notes:

You never ever see the entire creature. You see bits of it (very unclearly) hear and there. There are only two clear shots: a) a quick one of a foot and at the end its head. If you want to construct it, you do so in your mind only. There are and won't be any screenshots of the entire monster.

We are never told what it is or why it chose NYC for all the fun. Isn't it great that there is no preachy solution or explanation that it's due to nuclear testing, nasty chemicals released into the ocean, global warming, or whatever. It's just dropped into our laps as a FACT: there's a giant monster treating Manhattan Island like it's own private Coney Island.

Sure, there are always things in any monster movie that don't make sense when you stop to think about them. Here, for example, this guy is handed a camera another guy doesn't want and yet I have to say, he is pretty good at framing a shot even when running away from a 90 story tall monster. Would he stop (after some of his friends have been killed) to take a shot of two of his friends engaging in a passionate kiss? (And do people outside horror films actually passionately kiss when they know they have a critter the size of Montana stepping on buildings? ...hmmm).

Anyway, anyone who doesn't like Cloverfield is a retard and should be taken out behind the barn, shot, and fed to the pigs.

I thought it was ok. The camera work was pretty tiring. It's not something I'll watch again anytime soon, there doesn't seem to be anything worth paying more attention to.

Spoilerish

Just seemed like a regular monster movie with a "clever" point of view.

Don't ever go save the person who's trapped behind enemy lines. Too many better/more interesting people will die trying to help.

Was a turd. Nothing more, nothing less. To quote myself, this movie is sooo 1998.
