News Homeless Center: Old Town Neighborhood Association Joins Sten’s “Pissed List”

Posted by Matt Davis on Wed, Jan 9 at 11:26 AM

The Old Town Neighborhood Association has joined the ever lengthening line of people waiting to hammer Erik Sten on his decision to site a permanent day access center for the homeless on block 25—between NW3rd and 4th and Everett and Glisan down there.

Here’s the meaty text of a resolution it intends to read at this morning’s 11:30 meeting of the Old Town Visions Committee in the basement of Central City Concern on Burnside:

“The Old Town Chinatown Neighborhood Association recognizes the potential of Block 25 as an important development plot for North Old Town/Chinatown renewal under the proposed PDC plan for the area (North Old Town/Chinatown Redevelopment Strategy). The OTCTNA believes Block 25 represents a significant development opportunity. As such, further consideration of future development options and their potential impact on the neighborhood economy is needed.

Proposed considerations include but are not limited to:
1) Festival Space.
2) Market Space (farmers or otherwise).
3) Work/Live solutions similar to those throughout Portland.
4) General mixed use Business/Residential.

At this time OTCTNA accordingly opposes the siting of a Resource Center/Access Center with related low or very-low income housing on Block 25. OTCTNA requests that all work on that project siting with regards to Block 25 halt immediately until additional proposals such as those outlined above can be evaluated or re-evaluated by the attendant parties and City Agencies in Public Forums.”

If you’ve got nothing better to do and are interested in the future of old town, the day access center, or simply would like to watch Erik Sten take an earful, why not come down? I’ll be there with my camera, just itching for some conversation. It’s worth noting: The neighbors are probably too late to stop the center being built. But hey, this is Portland, so you never know. Maybe that’s why Sten announced his resignation? So he can take all the shit for the center, get it off the ground, and be off:

STEN: “What? You’re not gonna re-elect me? Boo hoo!”

Masterful, sir. I now see why Nigel Jacquiss described you as “Machiavellian.” I demand access to your gene pool so I may fuse it with my own and spawn an unstoppable monster.
