As recently reported around these parts, the building that houses Jackpot Records (along with Naked City Clothing, and Bishops Barbershop) was recently sold for quiet a hefty price tag. Rather than risk being crushed by the overpriced condos (or tapas restraurants) that are probably going to occupy their former digs, owner Isaac Slusarenko and Jackpot are pulling up stakes and moving a block-and-a-half down the road.
Their new location at 3574 SE Hawthorne Blvd is set to open on the first of March. Full press release after the jump.
For ten years, Jackpot Records has been serving loyal customers at its 3736 SE Hawthorne neighborhood location. In 2005, Jackpot Records opened a second store in Downtown Portland at SW 9th and Burnside. As the independently owned music stores have grown from one to two stores so has their knowledgeable staff and customer base. Add a FREE annual Jackpot Music Film Festival and hundreds of FREE in-store performances and the facts show that owner Isaac Slusarenko is dedicated to bringing good music to a supportive Portland community.
And now in the new year of 2008 Jackpot Records is pleased to announce its move to 3574 SE Hawthorne Boulevard. The new building will provide additional space and offer expanded music-purchasing options. New paint, new fixtures and other building improvements will occur in February with a Celebration Opening planned on the first of March.
Slusarenko states, “When I was notified that our current building was being sold I made a list of priorities which included our desire to remain on Hawthorne. And when the opportunity arose to move just 1.5 blocks down from our current store; it provided the perfect solution.
Our goal is to take the best possible care of our staff and customers. In making the move to the new location we will be able to continue to provide our staff with the Health Insurance Package that we’ve offered since 2001. If we had stayed at our current location this would not have been possible due to increases in rent from the new owners.”
“Our staff is excited about the move to a larger and more comfortable space. This move demonstrates how Isaac, our staff and our customers believe in supporting a healthy and vibrant homegrown business.”
Says Brian McIntyre, Hawthorne Store Manager.
“Bishops Barber Shop and Naked City, our current neighbors have been great businesses to be associated with. Our new neighbors Cup and Saucer and Red Light Clothing have already welcomed us to their block. This means a lot to us to know that our move is welcomed and that they are eager to have us next to their businesses.” says Slusarenko.
Continuing, Slusarenko adds, “Portland is a city where music has always been appreciated and where independent record stores have been supported. We know our customers have lots of options for buying music and we are honored that they continue to choose us.
When are they going to put in a McDonalds underneath the condos?

I heard through a little birdy that the new owner of that strip is in fact the owner of bishops...very interesting if it is true, I cannot imagine him wanting to raise the rent and risk losing some great neighbors....
The building that housed India 4 U at 3343 S.E. Hawthorne is now entirely vacant, too. It could be perfect for a bar/restaurant rehab like Gold Dust Meridian pulled off with the former tax preparer's office at 32nd and Hawthorne. Same mid-century architecture; same access to foot traffic.
I read the linked Merc article on the changes on Hawthorne, and was most interested by this excerpt:
However, according to Multnomah County records, there's a problem: Nudo [owner of Nick's hot dog place] hasn't paid taxes for the last four years and the building has gone into the redemption program, the first step of foreclosure.
Makes me kinda wish I'd known the guy was a douchebag tax-avoiding jagoff for the past four years before patronizing his lousy restaurant. How about a "who's shirking their civic responsibility?" feature from the Merc, wherein you reveal the names of local businesses who aren't doing that whole taxpaying thing like the rest of us proletariat?
jackpot sticks around, and nick's coney island is maybe going away. so far so good.
that nick's coney island owner guy seemed very unhappy, assuming he was the old guy i asked for a veggie dog, and assuming it was him that scowled at me and said no. this was in like 2005, and he'd presumably been on hippie hawthorne for a long time, leaving eons of vegetarian girlfriends to poke miserably at bad potato salad and vow never to return.
My commercial real estate friend told me the other day he hates to do it but he looks at Hawthorne and all he sees are bulldozers and dollar signs. He say's he knows those that built that building where Dosha and Pho Van are have been looking on Hawthorne for more opportunities.
That guy that owns Nick's is a dick. He parks his red cadillac out front and puts traffic cones around it so nobody can park within 5 feet of his car.
I shudder to think of all the places along Hawthorne that will be condos in the next 10 years. 34th is like ground zero--I can see them tearing down the old India-4-U building and buying that parking lot from Showcase Music and putting one there, and then buying the Showcase out and putting one in there as well. If the Showcase owns their building and the parking lot, they're sitting on an absolute goldmine.
That being said, I think the slowing market has already derailed one building (the 2nd half of the H45 building), and I heard rumors about another one (@ 46th or so, at the old Portland Impact site) being delayed as well. So who knows.
@11: You're right, nothing's doing at the Portland Impact site, although I wish they'd hurry up and get on with it. I think the crappy upholstery store on the adjacent parcel may be holding things up - the building is on the market for $450,000, according to a mailer I got last week. Somebody, please buy that thing and knock it over, it saddens me every time I walk by it to the bus stop.
Meridian is fun, went in there for their (long) happy hour last weekend.
Food-wise, think Sapphire Hotel - had to de-vein one of my yummy bacon wrapped shrimp, which was fine, but shows the cook-dude might need to wake up a little.
They have a lot of fine beer on tap, a groovy red pool table, and a large painting of some kaiju attacking a train. Marvelous.
i think the condos and yuppies moving to the east side is absolutely disgusting...i saw the building that is at 42nd an d belmont on some home channel by accident...the fucking 1 bedrooms are 400,000..who are the jackoffs paying that much to live there? WHY DONT YOU PEOPLE WHO COMPLAIN ABOUT CONDOS AND YUPPIES TELL THEM THEY ARE NOT WELCOME IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD LIKE I DO??????!!!!!! MAKE THEM FEEL UNCONFORTABLE!!!! DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT
