Election 2008 Maria Rojo de Steffey Gets the Last Laugh

Posted by Amy J. Ruiz on Tue, Jan 8 at 5:05 PM

I didn’t blog about this originally, because the email that Maria Rojo de Steffey sent me, after I reported on the conversation I overheard between her and political strategist Mark Weiner (the two chatted about her perceived shortcomings last month, as she was considering a city council run) was of the between-you-and-me sort.

I thought for sure that Rojo de Steffey would be annoyed at the least, or angry at the worst, over my account. Instead, she wrote that she was still chuckling, and she asked me to send her “a wallet size photo and a 5 X 7 for my desk so I will never forget you.” Aww.

But she might not be able to live it down: The Oregonian’s S. Renee Mitchell wrote a column yesterday, praising Rojo de Steffey’s more recent decision not to run for city council, noting her “designer set of baggage.” And Mitchell tossed me some of the, er, credit for Rojo de Steffey’s decision:

Rojo de Steffey couldn’t help but be humiliated by a Portland Mercury reporter’s recent online accounting of an overheard coffeehouse conversation between the potential City Hall candidate and campaign strategist Mark Wiener. Oops.

So I have to set the record straight: Humiliated or not, Rojo de Steffey has a damn good sense of humor.
