Here’s one to start with, from a former cop:
Regarding the article written by Matt Davis wherein he questioned/criticized Cop’s attitudes, reasons, etc for violence against blacks and Latinos, I have to throw in my two cents. As a former police officer, from a very large city that has been leading the country in crime since the 60’s, I would have to say that by and large blacks and Latino’s (Cubanos in my case) committ a disproportionate amount of crime for their relative population percentage.Hmm. Do some ridealongs—check. Actually try the job—check. Do some real research—check. I’m just glad this guy retired, because his literacy is clearly slipping in old age.While it’s true that some cops harbor prejudice towards certain groups, most just try to protect those of you who are either too smart or too afraid to be police officers. Personally, I was even disgusted with “whitey” by the time I quit.
Blacks not only commit a large number of crimes, but they tend to resist arrest with violence and/or run when stopped. Blacks also tend to carry firearms, as do Cubanos. I have very little experience with Mexicans, so I can’t say why guns are drawn on them except that maybe Meth users and dealers tend toward violence. There’s also evidence to show that gang-bangers are relatively violent offenders.
Profiling is also a necessary tool of law enforcement, tho’ some cops tend to get carried away resulting in unnecessary traffic stops and arrests. However, fill a car with four young black guys and at least one of them has a serious arrest record. The others in the car rarely have the sense to avoid hanging out with their criminal homeboys, sometimes resulting in their arrest. In the 60’s thru’ the 80’s if a cop observed a white guy with long hair driving a beat up car, he could safely assume that there just might be drugs in that vehicle. Hippies, however, rarely resisted arrest.
So, Matt, why don’t you take some “ride-alongs” or actually try doing the job of protecting your fellow man and see for yourself what goes on in the real world? I know I wouldn’t do the job again. Not because of critics like yourself, but because of the shit one constantly steps in on the job. So the next time you decide to write an article like this you might want to do some real research.
Compared to my former city and department, Portland and it’s Police Bureau are very peaceful. Count your blessings.
Name withheld to protect the not-so-innocent.
Hmm...why might minorities be more likely to carry weapons? Why might "one in four" black men have an arrest record?
"safely assume that there just might be drugs in that vehicle" Assume that there *might* be... wha??
This guy is not helping the cops' case at all.
And the cops wonder why we hate them and all those that support them. To think that we actually pay for this shit.
To be fair I don't think this guy is representative of "all cops," just as your hate isn't necessarily representative of all the public. Different strokes for different folks, and all that.
Sometimes I wonder. My aunt was a cop in L.A. during the whole OJ Simpson thing and she said that if they think that you did something that they'll put the evidence there. Couple that with bias of any kind and then layer it over with good cops who won't report bad cops and you just get bad cops. If you can't count on a cop to bust a cop, then who can you count on?
Thanks for sharing this "letter" from a retired
cop (or erstwhile wannbe cop that woke-up
and saw the truth for what it was and got the
hell out before his soul was irredeemably per-
verted beyond redemption). This issue of racial
profiling is what is at the heart of the Jason
Sery debacle. As we all know, Sery was pro-
filing Perez with his fateful stop that day
when it escalated to tragic and deadly
consequences, for there was simply no
logical reason for Sery/Macumber (or
whatever his damned name was...Sery's
significant other partner that lobbed all the
needless tasering at Perez...tasering a
dead man, how damned stupid can one get
...come on really now!) to stop Perez as
they did.
It was in their attempts to escape JUSTICE
for unlawful use of excessive force where it
is given away as to what they were doing.
It is in parsing the spoken word/written record
that the TRUTH is found...the devil is in the
details, as you have to get deep into those
details to ferret out the FACTS. One can't
twitter by them, for in all their verbose attempt
to skate by, they did give themselves away.
Please read the record. I'm sure the lawyers
representing Perez's family have, and am sure
they caught what is waiting full recognition to
be the hammer that smashes their asses with.
Hey, I'm no big fan of cops, but at least this guy has some facts to back up his position. Look at the F.B.I stats. Are racist white cops really the reason why certain groups of people seem to be more violent than others? 'Cause I'll bet ya dollars to doughnuts that all you civil rights crusaders are probably as vehemently anti-violence as you are anti-gun and anti-racist. Don't get me wrong here. I am a former racist. Now, whenever I wanna say the N-word, I subsitute it the the word neighbor. That's just my little way of reminding myself that we are all in this together. Really, aren't we all just neighbors on this big ol' planet Earth? By the way, you're all a bunch of neighbor lovers.
Why do cops (and knee-jerk cop supporters) always go off on this "you can't criticize us because you haven't been out on the street like us" kick?
Imagine if stats came out showing that you were way more likely to be injured by a surgeon because of your race. No self-respecting doctor would say to the press "You can't judge us until you've spent time in the operating room with the scalpel in your hand."
If NASA's rockets kept blowing up, the engineers wouldn't attack a critical journalist with "you've never been in the welding shop - you need to try it and see what happens in the real world before you jump to conclusions."
Either cops should be professional and willing to accept outside non-expert civilian review based on statistics, science and a logical defense of their occupational practices or they should just admit that because they get to decide who lives or die they really want everyone to just shut up. But they need to stop pretending that everyone would be on their side if they just would "see for themselves what life is like out on the street."
It's especially hard to take the cops' "if you only knew the danger out there" arguments seriously in this city when a disturbingly high number of criminal cases are dumped or lost by the DA due to illegal police actions or shoddy police work.
Police make stops and person contacts based on crime trends, not race. Matt Davis uses numbers in his most recent article to spin a story to show how terrible and racist Portland Police officers are. I have a few numbers to share.
I wish I had more than just the street robbery numbers from one PDX precinct, however, in my experience these numbers are fairly consistent when it comes to major felony crimes (Robbery, Assault, Etc.) Here are the numbers for street robbery in SE PDX in the last 2 months.
There were 23 total suspects reported by the robbery victims.
White = 5 or 22%
Black = 9 or 39%
Hispanic = 8 or 35%
Native American = 1 or 4%
Of those 8 suspects were armed
White = 1
Black = 4
Hispanic = 3
It makes me wonder why numbers like these were not show in Matt's article.
hey matt, where did your story re: the city auditor go?

Good riddance, racist grandpa. Your sweet butterscotch candies offer little solace from your sick, sick world.
