Last night, KPSU kicked off a month long radio series featuring most of the city’s mayoral candidates; each one will be on the air for an hour, spinning some of their favorite music and telling the city—at least the part of the city tuned into 1450 AM or listening to KPSU on the web—why they’d be the best mayor.
Kyle Burris, a 21-year-old PCC student who’s admittedly a longshot for mayor, kicked off the series, hunkering down in KPSU’s broadcasting booth with Jeremy Hardy, KPSU development director and co-host of the station’s PDX Soundtrack show.
Burris spelled out his platform: He’s a native Portlander who wants to turn Portland back into a city where “yuppies and hipsters may not want to live.” He was inspired to run after heading down to the Pearl District for the first time last summer, and discovering that “it was disgusting,” and a “mini Seattle” that’s pulling Portland down and “ghettoizing the yuppies.” He says the streetcars are “nothing but buses for people who think they’re too good for buses.” Burris has one idea he thinks is so controversial, he let Hardy in on it before they were on the air, so the host wouldn’t be too taken aback: He wants to outlaw cars in Portland, with limited exceptions for those with disabilities or businesses delivering and receiving goods. “For the average person, bikes and buses are good enough,” says Burris, who lives with his mom on 64th near East Burnside (“it’s not glorious, but it lets me run for mayor,” he says).
How’s he going to score three votes on the city council to ban cars, I asked him? The mayor isn’t an empire who gets to make up sweeping laws. Burris smiles, and points out that if he actually is elected at mayor, the voters really said something—and he’d probably be able to scare up the other two votes.
Burris has a nascent plan for winning—he plans to register “as many high school and college students” as possible, plus hippies and punks. “I’ll get all the dispossessed to vote for me,” he adds.
The show is archived here, if you want to check out more about Burris, or listen to his favorite tunes (from the Ike Reilly Assassination, Against Me, Viva Voce and LoveLikeFire).
Nick Popenuk, who had been running for mayor but recently switched to a commissioner race, followed Burris. Next week, Craig Gier’s on at 3 pm, and Jeff Taylor at 4 pm. Sam Adams is on the air on February 3rd at 3 pm, followed by Beryl McNair at 4 pm. The next weekend, February 10, it’s James Lee at 3 pm, and Slav Davidson at 4 pm (pending confirmation on that last one).
Just out of curiosity, what's your definition of "hipster"? I'm not sure we're talking about the same people here.
Having said that; yeah, the hipsters are going to be a little harder to get rid of. Fortantly, they aren't the ones doing the real damage to our city. They're just really annoying.
Kyle! Is that how your father and I taught you how to spell "fortunately"?
Now get off that computer and clean your room!
You have my vote, Kyle.
So, I guess that all these "dispossessed" hippies, punks, high school and college students don't vote, right? And that when they do vote, they'd rather vote for someone their own age, despite how little experience he has? Oh, that's right; the car ban. THAT'S how you'll get them. Because none of these "dispossessed" souls drive cars, right? Gotcha.

I LIKE HIM!
Great platform!

I think hipsters are probably the only people who actually would want to live in a city without cars. I know I'd move my hipster ass back immediately.
