News Three Lions Bakery Out?

Posted by Matt Davis on Wed, Jan 23 at 2:15 PM

Food Dude is reporting that the Three Lions Bakery has moved out of NW 5th and Davis location in Old Town:

An upscale restaurant and bar are going in. The latest I’ve heard, is it will be run by the General Manager of Andina. I think it his going to be his restaurant.
It’s too bad. I often meet people down there to talk about Old Town politics and they have a reasonably open restroom policy if homeless people drop in—in other words they don’t say “no public restrooms.” Most of the kids working in there look like the work keeps them out of trouble, too. Now we’re getting an upscale restaurant.

THREE LIONS BUILDING: Old Town meeting spot…

On the other hand, I’m pleased a private investor has the optimistic outlook to invest in such a venture in Old Town. For that, I wish them the best, and I think the district will be grateful.

“I’m sad to see them leave,” says Patrick Nolen of Sisters of the Road, who is “kind of bummed to hear it.” He goes there weekly for a personnel meeting and will now have to go up the street, to Backspace.

What do you think?

I think that Patrick guy must be lazy indeed if he cannot walk the extra half block to Backspace... oh, wait... thats me! lol
we alternated between 3Lions and Backspace, so I will still have somewhere to go, but it is still a bummer deal to lose some friends in the neighborhood.
thanks
Patrick

I saw the for ad for the location last month on Craigslist. The listing was asking around 40-$50,000 for the space and contents. It would be interesting if they actually it through Craigslist.

I have no cold hard evidence for it, but I always had the impression that 3 Lions' motive for 'employing' those kids was not so much to keep 'em out of trouble, more like taking advantage of them.
For the last 3 years, there have been many help wanted ads on craigslist for 3 Lions. It was some kind of unpaid labor/apprenticeship thing; I do not know the details, but it didn't seem entirely legal, and the owner didn't enjoy the best reputation in the service industry crowd.

SC, would you care to comment on what made you think that these apprenticeships didn't seem "entirely legal"?

As I recall, the ads often stated that the "apprentice" position was unpaid.

A true apprenticeship is a paid position. An apprentice earns roughly 50% of a journeyman's wage in exchange for the training and experience he/she receives.

There are federal labor laws regarding internships and trainee programs. An intern or trainee is supposed to be paid unless the business he/she is training with receives no financial benefit from the trainees services.

The intern or trainee is not supposed to be taking the place of and doing the work of a regular employee (baker). He/she is supposed to be under the supervision of of a skilled worker.

I was told by more than one person that "interns" or "apprentices" were given a basic intro then left unsupervised to do production baking for the business.
