I spotted this on the back of a bus yesterday:

Sweet! Portland’s bike boxes—a space for cyclists to wait at the light in front of auto traffic—are one step closer to reality. They’ll be installed at a handful of the city’s most dangerous intersections for cyclists, as soon as the materials arrive (I hear the paint, or whatever high tech goo they use to mark the pavement, is on order) and the weather’s right.
And that's a good thing.
Except you car-driving morons can't even learn to stop behind a crosswalk properly in the first place to let pedestrians cross safely (nor do people RARELY follow the law that states you must wait for a pedestrian to finish crossing at least one lane over before moving on, and that pedestrians are allowed to cross at UNMARKED crosswalks as well), so I can only hope that these bike boxes will work, even when there's only a small amount of bike traffic.
These would be unnecessary but for the careless driving of motorists. The only reason these are being built is that there is such a high percentage of car drivers who don't look to their R when turning R over a bike lane. There were two deaths within a month on account of this very behavior.
Blame the motorists, not Sam. It is the traffic safety community in this town which has been clamoring for these, to save lives. If everyone drove correctly, none of these engineering solutions would be necessary.
FYI, it's a plastic/paint mixture.
And to Le-oh - I'll observe the bike boxes, but that means you cyclists will have to stop at red lights, which many don't do, as well as wearing black at night, riding fixies without hand brakes, not wearing helmets, bombing hills, and riding with headphones.
Unlike your popular conception of motorists, I *don't* want to hit cyclists, and try my hardest to avoid them. But a minority of cyclists ride with no respect for traffic laws and their own safety.
I get a boner anticipating the first bike box death. And since king kookie potter will be responsible he will be sued both at the city level (ah fuck tort) and personaly (ah jack pot).
Ooooo and it is just like Europe another huge boner. Sammy is there anything (just like Europe) that you don't like? How about bath houses? Ummmm bath houses, boners, bikes...Ummmmm sniffing bike seats....
Icky thoughts:
You need to go for a long, brisk walk. (Daily is best.) It will clear head and soothe your soul. But watch out for bullying and aggressive drivers. There are lots of them out there.
So Aaron, you're saying that you will run down someone obeying the law on a bike if you see or hear about someone else doing something on a bike, even legally, that you do not like? Are you unaware of how screwed up in the head you are?
No, Jerry - I'm calling out the reckless cyclists of this city. You're reading things into my comment that aren't there.
Safety is a two-way street, pun intended.
So now that cycling is safe again, there is no reason for Sam Adams to continue his push to lower the fine for self centered cyclists who run stop signs and red lights. After all those fines can help pay for the costs of the bike boxes.
If that doesn't cover the cost, a cyclist license would do the trick. They should pay for that anyways, since they are getting out of paying taxes on the roads they use.
Holy fucking cow! Some mean ass mutha fuckers posting shit here!
Let em have their bike boxes for Christs sakes!
(one thing I like about this blog, its truly free speech)
Just imagine the gridlock that these ridiculous traffic impediment devices will immediately create.
Think about all the emissions spewing into the air from all those automobiles idling at stoplights.
Yeah, the above commenter is spot-on about cyclists paying their fair share. If they intend to use the roads with the same rights as motorists, or, arguably, with more rights, then they should be registered, licensed, and insured.
Cyclists should be rigorously policed, and ticketed each and every time they violate the law.
Me, I'm just dreading the day when some scofflaw cyclist with no light, dressed in hipster black, flies right through a red light into my path, and I'm unable to stop in time. It's inevitable, I have to slam on the brakes nightly to avoid killing or maiming you morons. It's only a matter of time.
And, as odd as it might sound, I'm not going to be very happy about it. Think about how selfish it is on your part, to give no thought whatsoever as to how that motorist is going to feel when they are unable to avoid running you down when you blow through those stop signs.
And, you know what ? I ride a bike too sometimes, and Portland's legions of scofflaw cyclists really do give the rest a bad name.
Well folks it sounds like it is about time for a petition to circulate to force the bike idiots to buy a license, insurance, and a tax on bikes. How about that you chumps?
Cool. I'm all for additional bike lanes, routes, these boxes, etc.
But yeah, the law/ticketing thing has always been a mystery to me. Motorists get tickets for running a red light/stop sign and for not wearing a seat belt. But I don't think I've ever heard of a cyclist (either myself or friends) getting a ticket for running a red light/stop sign or for not wearing a helmet, even though I see probably a dozen of these incidents a day (seems like only a minority wear helmets any more). Weird. Motorists and cyclists share the same roads, they should also share similar laws and financial penalties.
I've never heard of any of my friends getting tickets for running stop signs / lights in their cars (something that happens VERY regularly - just as often as cyclists). I have heard about it happening on bikes - remember the sting at Ladd's Circle that was going on at the exact same time a cyclist was hit on N Interstate and the police said they didn't have time to investigate it?
Helmet use isn't a legal requirement in Oregon. Maybe it should be, but you can't currently compare it with not wearing a seatbelt in a car.
Yes, it does annoy the hell out of me when I see cyclists wearing black and no lights at night, etc, giving the rest of us a bad name. But I'll support zero-tolerance enforcement for cyclists the day they introduce it for drivers. Starting with ticketing every single person who ever goes over the speed limit.
There's a lot of people in glass houses on this thread, and a lot of broken glass.
This is SUCH a stupid idea. The problem in bike deaths is generally motorists not being aware that a bike is approaching from behind. These squares are not going to be at more than a few intersections. This will just lead to motorists expecting bicyclists to be in front of them, in full view, and discourage the habit of looking for them in the rear view mirror. It's just among the stupidest ideas I've ever heard of.
I'm all for fair road tax! We should absolutely tax each vehicle based on the damage it causes the road. Vehicle weight would be a close and reasonable approximation of that. I can't imagine cyclists would mind paying a fraction of a cent each year for the wear and tear they place on the roads--even though most of them are already paying taxes for the car they own, but have chosen not to drive.

This is just another example of fuckin Sam "The Scam" Adams trying to make driving a car harder. He is the leader of the Anti-car mafia and must be stopped.
Fuck you Sam Adams!
