Let’s try and muster up some enthusiasm for Portland’s vibrant theater community, shall we? If you make it to the bottom of this blog post you will learn what local sketch comedy troupe makes the funniest superhero jokes, which show to see with the post-menopausal woman in your life, and what Sam Adams does on a Saturday night.
Tonight the Light-Fingered Five perform at the Hungry Tiger Too. Improv comedy in a bar—could go either way. Never seen ‘em, can’t comment. 207 SE 12th, 9 pm, $5
A safer bet for funny: Tomorrow the 3rd Floor opens That’s Entertainment? (a reprise of their 2005 show of the same name). The 3rd Floor are great. Smart, dorky, hilarious. You can usually count on at least one comic book joke per show, plus super smart video integration and ridiculously elaborate costumes. (My favorite: the manatee. or maybe the walking vagina.) I’ve been waiting for years for one of their shows to disappoint me, and it hasn’t happened yet. Go see them. Make reservations because this show will sell out opening weekend. (Reservations at 627-9847). Miracle Theater, 525 SE Stark, 8 pm, $12
The Super Project Lab takes the Armory Stage to make improv based on stories told by local celebs. Tonight, it's "Meet Your Novelist," with Marc Acito, and on Saturday, "Meet Your Commissioner," with dream-boat city commissioner Dan Saltzman Sam Adams. Did that joke work? I can't even tell. And for the record, Erik Sten is the cute one.
Speaking of cute, hey, nice segue, Alison!:
After a five-year stint in the cast of Hot Flashes: The Musical, (note: that was not a joke), Sharon Knorr's returned to the stage with a one-woman show, Why Can't I Marry the Cute Beatle?" The play opens tomorrow at the West End Theatre. It's about "growing older and finding the joke in it all," and playing the "'Tennis Game' of love" and... this is kinda bumming me out. If you're a girl and you're not already afraid that when you turn fifty you will lose all aesthetic perspective and start reading self-help books about spirituality and wearing peacock-feather earrings and those shawl things that look like blankets, click here.
You've got until March 9 to see Portland Center Stage's Twelfth Night. Highly recommended. It's been a while since I've seen anything from the big companies that I liked this much. (For example, I might be in the critical minority here, but I found Artists Rep's current production of Rabbit Hole pretty excruciating).
I almost forgot: Cirque de Soleil, bitches. Don't click that link if you get creeped out easy.
