Politics Protest at City Hall?

Posted by Amy J. Ruiz on Wed, Feb 6 at 9:38 AM

As Matt reported last night, “Stephen Ying of the Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association has been handing out fliers… reading, ‘Show Your Support For Saving Block 25—Meet at City Council Chambers on the Second Floor tomorrow, Wednesday, at 9:30am.’” The group is opposed to siting a homeless day access center on the site.

It’s 9:38, and council chambers are nearly full—with bike advocates and others who support the street fee, which is on today’s agenda. I only see a few of the folks associated with the CCBA, the same group that mobilized quickly last fall to descend on city hall in opposition to renaming 4th Avenue for César E. Chávez. Then, the group was ten times larger (it’s entirely possible there are more day center opponents out in the hall).

I checked in with Erik Sten’s staffer, Margaret Bax, who was at last night’s Old Town meeting where the protest was announced. She confirmed that there’s nothing related to the homeless day access center on the agenda, so it’s unclear if any protesters will have an opportunity to address the council.

UPDATE @ 9:52: Matt Davis just ducked into chambers, and reports that there are “a few” protesters out in the hall.
