In the run-up to next week’s Debate Club on the Columbia River Crossing (Tuesday! 7 pm! Edge of Belmont, SE 34th and Morrison!), we check in with the candidates to see what they think about the massive regional project.
Our region is poised to consider what to do about the Columbia River Crossing—and we’re faced with an option that costs roughly $4.2 billion dollars, and possibly doubles the size of the bridge over the Columbia River. In your opinion, does the staff-recommended option—a 10 to 12 lane bridge, plus light rail transit, tolls, and improved pedestrian and bike crossing—meet Portland’s goals and needs? What would you advocate for as the optimal plan for the crossing, and how would you ensure that Portland’s needs and goals aren’t lost in a massive regional, bi-state project?

I support a replacement bridge between Portland and Vancouver over the Columbia River. However, I have conditioned my support of a new bridge on including light rail, bike lanes and walking paths as part of the project. The current bridge is unsafe for drivers, walkers and bikers. Even worse, it has no capability of having a light rail system constructed on it. In my view, the future of commuting depends on an adequate light rail system in addition to safe and adequate paths and bike lanes.
I do believe the current plan addresses my minimum requirement for support of the project.

In the next few decades, Portland is expecting an explosion in growth and cars. It is appropriate that we plan as best as possible for these changes. I highly encourage a focus on voluntary car reduction/use. We don't need to punish drivers any more, what with high gas costs, insurance, etc.; however, we need to reward those who take light rail, bike, walk and other alternative forms of transportation. To ensure that our voice isn't lost, requires that I do what I can to get Portlanders involved in the process itself (public input hearings, public testimony, ensuring large turnout at voting centers, etc.).Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to read this statement.
Respectfully Submitted,
