Point/Counterpoint: Alison vs. Courtney
Did the Old Spaghetti Factory’s spumoni ever have chunks?
Alison: Did so!
Courtney: Did not!
Alison: Did so!
Courtney: Did so not! Wait, maybe there were nuts in it, but it definitely didn’t have fruity chunky bits.
Alison: Did so!
BLOGTOWNIES, please help us solve this intellectual lunchtime argument. The fundamental strength of the Mercury’s editorial team is teetering in the balance.

“Still Life with Spumoni” by Amy J. Ruiz
Mercury Fun Fact: The Old Spaghetti Factory’s first location was opened on a rainy day in Portland on January 10, 1969. And the preferred way of pronouncing chianti is “kee-an-tee,” which just smacks of wrong.
Aaaaaah, shit. Any former Tacoma-ites out there? Did the Tacoma Spag Fac ever have fruity bits?
The old fake-Gumba shitball factory!!! Don't forget your flair!!!
All I remember from the Tacoma "Spag Fac" (worst nickname ever) were the giant sand pails full of alcohol they would bring you. And those memories are very hazy...
As a nearly lifelong resident of Portland and, yeah, as a nearly lifelong customer of the Old Spaghetti Factory, I can assure you that there were definitely icky fruit bits in the spumoni ice cream back in the day. It disgusted the hell out of me when I was a kid. The new, fruit-free spumoni is much better.
Long live the Manager's Favorite. Half meat sauce, half mizithra spaghetti consumed while sitting on faux-antique furniture = comfort food euphoria.
So, where do they actually get their chunkless spumoni? And can I get some too?
Yes. Manager Favorite: "the meat and cheese, please".
And does anyone remember the short-lived knock-off "Spaghetti Warehouse" in Beaverton? I used to tell my friends "that's where they store what the Spaghetti Factory makes."
Also, the worldwide placemats still show (gasp!) the *old* Old Spaghetti Factory for the "portland" location, not the new location on the waterfront. They really need to update those.
When I worked there from 1999-2002 there were absolutely no chunkies in the spumoni...unless you got it when it was half-frozen, then there were some ice chunks...yum.
mos def! there were at least little cherry chunks in the pink, and pistachio chunks in the green... yup yup!
Chunks yes. Candied fruit, same as in a fruit cake but just tiny bits.
Not only did they used to have chunks in the ice cream, you used to get two kinds of butter and the garlic butter actually had some kick! And managers favorite is the best, but it's all about the clam sauce/mizithra cheese combo for the win!
most certainly had cherry and pistachio chunks... disappointed they're gone if so.
My family used to dine at the OSF often when I was a kid and I remember hating the spumoni precisely because of the chunks.
I was sad when they closed the original location downtown. It was strange to dance there (Scoochies (sp?)) when I was in high school.
When will Courtney admit that she was wrong???
Oh, and Courtney? You just lost some mad fact-checking points.
Mmmmm, clam sauce.
Well, there were both pistachios and weird fruity bits in it when I washed dishes there, in 1989. But mind you, I haven't eaten there in the time since.
