Film The Nerds Strike Back.

One of the best things about fanboys is also one of the worst. One one hand, dweebs of all stripes—be they comic book readers or Trekkies or World of Warcraft junkies—are fiercely loyal and uncommonly invested. They take their hobbies and their art seriously, and they’re genuinely passionate about whatever it is they’re into. That’s impressive, and admirable, and, I think, pretty rare.*

But that same level of fandom is also geeks’ downfall: A lot of times they get too tied up in what they think should happen with a book or a film or a game or whatever, and they end up shooting themselves in the collective foot and having no one take them seriously.

Looks like a bunch of nerds have finally gotten somebody to listen about something, though: The Hollywood Reporter has a story on how a bunch of Star Wars fans have invited themselves to the post-production clusterfuck of Fanboys, a Star Wars-themed comedy that was originally scheduled for release, like, forever ago. Once you’re past the fairly embarrassing details of the case (yes, a bunch of dudes dressed in stormtrooper outfits threatened to stand in picket lines outside of theaters showing Superhero Movie), there’s a pretty good story about a bunch of people banding together to take on the powers that be (in this case, Harvey Weinstein). It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out, though my gut says that at this point, the troubled Fanboys—which seemed like a niche film even before all this happened—is likely headed straight for DVD.

In other Lucas-related news: George Lucas wants you to know that you’ll probably hate the new Indiana Jones, and also—just in case you thought you were safe after Episode III—you should know that Star Wars isn’t going anywhere. Ever. i09 has the details.

*And yes, it can also be really fucking creepy. See above image.

Comments

Ok, so this post made me realize Ernie Cline - one of the Fanboys screenwriters - has been commenting on my blog and so I emailed him and he's not THAT Ernie Cline, but he has been in correspondance with the other Ernie Cline in the past and also he (the wrong Ernie Cline...or the right one?) has a surprisingly keen sense of humor.

It's confusing.

Thanks.
