« Domestic Partnership and Anti-Discrimination Repeals: Doomed to Failure? | Main | Good Morning, News!! »
Tonight during the KGW-Oregonian mayoral debate, KGW’s Randy Neves asked Dozono: “you’ve gotten some criticisms during the campaign in not sharing a lot of specific policy measures either in debates or during interviews. I’ve heard you even go so far as to say that as Sam Adams portrays himself as a policy wonk, you would surround yourself, you would hire policy wonks to help you out running the mayor’s office. Why should voters believe in your style, if you can’t offer them the specifics of substance.”
Dozono gave a non-answer, saying his “style of leadership has always been collaborative” (cue that drinking game!). “Clearly I don’t have the information my opponent may have,” he added.
Adams had a zinger of a rebuttal, which has had my phone ringing off the hook: “I don’t quibble with my opponents intentions, but we all know that many roads to many destinations are paved with the best of intentions. The fact of the matter is there have been some specifics in this race. Just yesterday I learned he would have the city join the Joint Terrorism Task Force, which would mean that our local officers are participating in the enforcement of of the PATRIOT Act here in the city of Portland. Mayor Potter strenuously opposed our continued participation. The PATRIOT Act weakens probable cause, it weakens our protections of privacy. So there are some specifics here, I know made with the best of intentions. But he and I disagree.”
Neves follows up, saying the JTTF point is interesting—can Dozono elaborate? “I’m not clear as to where Commissioner Adams got that information about my position… I would clearly negotiate with the anti-terrorist organization to talk about my involvement as a mayor, as a Commissioner in charge of the police bureau, to make sure we are part of that process, to make sure that we are not excluded from that process.”
Adams set the record straight: “The conversation took place at 2 pm last Friday in the Mercury offices as part of their endorsement interview. My opponent was asked if there was anything he disagreed with Mayor Potter about. Luckily the conversation was recorded.”
Indeed it was. Here’s that snippet (click to download), with our editor Wm. Steven Humphrey asking where Dozono and Potter split. Dozono waffles at first—and takes issue with the premise of Humphrey’s question—but with some prodding finally hones in on the JTTF at around the 1:45 minute mark.
I got the idea that the poor fellow was kind of out of his depth here, that's for sure. He really put his foot in it on the JTTF question – what could he have been thinking?
"Hey, Sam, here's a petard. Got a good grip? Excellent. Now HOIST FOR ALL YER WORTH!"
Hey now, let's not give Potter all the credit for pulling out of the JTTF. That was the product of activists, community members, and city commissioners (except Dan Saltzman.) The only people who wanted to remain in the probably-not-constitutional arrangement were the, heh heh, Portland Business Alliance, which Sho used to chair.
Fun fact! The words "Portland Business Alliance" don't appear anywhere on his Bio page, let alone that he was the organization's chair. Hunh! ROGUE!
I think it is great that Sho wants the city to particpate in the JTTF again. It is SOOOOOO stupid that Portland pulled out of it.
Scam "Creepy" Adams is going down!
So, Sho thinks that Portland police officers should help the FBI spy and collect information on Portland citizens and political organizations, without any oversight from the mayor?
You'd think, given his family's history in internment camps, that he'd be a little more reluctant to be complicit in trampling the civil rights of Americans by an intrusive, paranoid government.
Wow. How incredibly sad.
I love that a millionaire candidate can't articulate to the voters what he stands for. Remember George W. Bush?? Look what he did after he portrayed himself as a person who surrounded himself with talent.
Also, if Mr. Dozono is so great, why did he raid a trust fund?
Vote for Sam Adams. Lets keep Portland terrorist friendly. Maybe some brave freedom fighters will blow up Bonneville dam and give us what we all deserve for being so comfortable and smug and out of touch with the suffering we cause just by being alive.

Is Dozono always this incapable of stringing together coherent sentences?
Yes he is virtually incoherant at all times. If you want to put yourself through some real frustration go watch the WWs endorsement interview video. It's painfully obvious Sho doesn't get it.
It's utterly beyond me how this guy is even being considered a serious contender. Oh yeah, lots of money.
I think I'd still rather vote for this doddering old businessman over Adams. At least Sho seems to understand the concept of not neglecting basic service for his own personal glory, pet projects, special interests, condo developers, Pearl District yuppies, his pals, the bike crowd, etc.
isn't sho's mayoral run just a pet project for personal glory?
Hmmm, lets see, Trust the gov't? Nah. Suspend the constitution? NAH. Keep following the Repulicant party line? Nah. Check out Nationalpriorities.org too see what these assholes have cost this country. GO SAM ADAMS.GO make Sho a NO SHO
Sam Adams may be outshining Sho Dozono on soundbites, but don't make the mistake of thinking that he doesn't "get it."
He's an individual who has grown a successful business for many years, has rallied thousands of Oregonians on issues such as education, transportation, and goodwill events such as organizing over 1,000 Oregonians to go to NYC right after the 911 terrorist attacks (because of his efforts--Portland was the media darling of an entire week, the trip showcased on Good Morning America, the Today Show, in People Magazine, etc.) He arranged similar trips after the horrific tsunami in Asia, and the floods in New Orleans.
He "gets" it. And he gets it done.
So, although he's not as polished sounding as Sam on recent media coverage, remember that Sam has been doing TV interviews, many per week, for 12-years. He knows how to soundbyte.
Sho knows how to run a large business with employees who represent many families, how to advocate for Portland, and how to work collaboratively with people to get things done.
That's why I'm voting for Sho Dozono for the next Mayor of Portland!

It was no big deal getting together a bunch of people to head to NYC after 911. What great accomplishment is that? How many young men joined the armed forces after 911? Everyone and their mother was emotional for a week or two afterwards. What the hell does it have to do with being a good mayor of Portland? So he can get people together and go places. He should be a travel agent. It certainly doesn't qualify for a good mayor. I've met people like you before and they voted for George Bush because, they told me, "you can tell he really loves his wife". It had fuck-all to do with whether he was qualified to be president (he obviously isn't). Now why is it, as you mention in your post, that "Sam has been doing TV interviews, many per week, for 12-years". Because he's actually been in Portland politics, not business. Sam gets it, you most certainly don't. Get a grip.
Comment on this, Commenter.
If Sho is such a great business person then why after chairing the board of the Portland Business Alliance did the PBA choose not to endorse him outright?
If Adams is so bad for business why did the PBA co-endorse? Afterall they are the biggest business group in town. Portland's Chamber of Commerce.

Your answer to the lack of PBA endorsement for your great businessman will be fun to read.
Sho is running a negative campaign about Portland. In the WWeek interview, he went so far as to say "the bad news for me is that people in Portland, back in Decemeber, liked Portland and their neighborhood."
The carpetbagger moved here a year ago to run for mayor. He didn't even live in Portland until then.
The only specific thing I've heard him say is that we need more Walmarts. Do you think that's because his poll is financed by Walmart's lobbyist?
Hmm. Yeah, a great business man. He's really giving us the business isn't he?
Slick,
The PBA endorsed both candidates because over the past few elections anyone they've endorsed has Lost! They are the kiss of death for running a successful campaign - it's my opinion the PBA endorsed both candidates because they need to be seen as winners.
Are you saying that the business community sees themselves as a bunch of losers? Commenter, is Sho's affiliation with the "loser" PBA really why they didn't endorse him?
Or do you think it's because he was totally ineffective when he chaired their board?
Or do you think it's because he can't keep his business afloat without stealing from a child's trust fund?
Or is there some other reason that this great business man couldn't get the endorsement of the largest business organization in town?
You know, I've really very deliberately not been following any of this, so based upon this audio clip I need to ask: Is Dozono always this incapable of stringing together coherent sentences?
