Local film writer and author D.K. Holm—who currently writes for The Vancouver Voice, and has previously written for both the Willamette Week and the Mercury (you can find his Mercury pieces right here)—is suffering from esophageal cancer. That’s a shitty spot for anybody to be in, and the fact that Holm’s uninsured doesn’t help. Luckily, some good folks have stepped up, and a benefit to help defray Holm’s medical bills is happening.
Here’s the deal: On Sunday, April 27, at Cinema 21 (616 NW 21st), there’ll be “an evening of entertainment, wine and hors d’oeuvres—plus a silent auction featuring local artwork, restaurants, vacation rentals, and more.” The recommended donation to attend is just $10, and the event will include everything from a film screening to “Portland luminaries reading some of D.K.’s most deliciously vitriolic reviews and hate mail.” All the info you need about the benefit can be found here.
Holm’s blog can be read here, and a bunch of local film critics—from the Oregonian’s Shawn Levy and Mike Russell to Cinematical’s Eric Snyder—have blogged about Holm and the event. Hit those links if you want to learn more. But the most important part is this: Go to the benefit, or make a donation. Tickets are available now at Cinema 21.
Thanks for paying this forward, Erik!
