Tenants at the downtown Arthur Hotel may get a stay of execution on their no-cause eviction, following media interest. Tenant Daniel Roscoe, who pays his rent biweekly, says the manager of the apartments has told him all tenants will be getting a formal eviction notice today, but that they will not have to be out by June 1st as originally rumored.
“Anyone renting week to week gets ten days,” says Roscoe. “And anyone renting biweekly gets 30 days notice. Although I’ll believe that when I have the piece of paper in my hand.”
The building’s 40+ tenants were all told last Thursday that the apartment building’s owner wanted them out. We’re working a couple of angles on this story and will let you know what comes of it. Meanwhile the mayor’s office says it is working with the Bureau of Housing and Community Development to try to avert a housing crisis. Let’s hope the landlord has seen sense.
“The city is concerned about the short-notice displacement of these 48 people, especially considering how vulnerable they are,” says the Mayor’s public advocate, Jeremy Van Keuren. “Also, in a tight housing market. We are considering all our options given the limited resources we have.”
