The opening date for the day laborer site on MLK and Everett has been pushed back at least three weeks, according to Romeo Sosa, Director of VOZ. The site was supposed to open May 6th, 2008. Sosa expressed disappointment with the delay but remains hopeful about the site’s eventual opening.
“We are working with an architect to figure out the logistics. The trailer, tent, and the port a potties are being worked out. We just need some more time,” stated Sosa.
Carmen Rubio at the Mayor’s office and Sosa from VOZ assured me it was not a money issue, as VOZ has already received half of its city funds - to the tune of $100,000 - and will receive the rest when the site gets up and running.
The controversial project has received much criticism since its conception last year. Local businesses have voiced anger and frustration over having been left out of the planning process. They are also majorly concerned with future livability issues.
For the past six weeks, business owners from the area have been trying to hammer out a Good Neighbor Agreement (GNA) with VOZ. They are currently in the drafting phase and expect to have something ready to be signed by June. Teri Pierson, one of two GNA facilitators, says the process is moving along and believes “the sides are making good progress.”
Nonetheless, the delay puts into question VOZ’s ability to organize and run a project that absolutely requires a good game plan in order to alleviate the distrust and aggravation felt by neighbors.
