I'll agree with the "class act" comment. She definitely made her point without getting bitchy or whiny in there. Points to Ellen.
Hmmm, one of the participants in this discussion was able to cogently lay out her position on the subject. The other just had to "respectfully disagree" and had nothing of substance to add to the conversation.
Bush's third term, indeed...
McCain chose not to press the issue, and why should he? The vast majority of Americans, both Democrats and Republications, agree with him. Remember, Measure 36 passed even in liberal Multnomah County.
Personally, I think the Oregon system has it right - "married" for male/female couples, "civil unions" for same sex couples. Same rights, different combinations, different titles.
While M36 was being debated, the magazine Just Out listed something like 150 legal advantages that married couples enjoyed. Those advantages in most cases are now available to a gay couple via a civil union.
However, now that they have the same legal protections, gay couples wish to up the ante to include the same terminology - the big "M" - marriage.
Since a civil union in Oregon pretty much provides the same legal rights as a marriage, why do homosexuals now wish to have their relationships labeled the same as heterosexuals? My guess is that they want those relationships to be recognized as the exact same as a marriage between a man and a woman.
And therein lies the difference. I believe most Oregonians (and Americans) have no problem providing homosexual couples with the same rights as their heterosexual compatriots. However, I also believe that the vast majority of Americans also believe that there is a fundamental difference between these two types of unions and that they should be recognized with differing language.
The fact of the matter is, that homosexuality is not considered normal in the natural order of beings. However, just because it is not normal, does not mean that a person should be discriminated against due to that difference. However, it still remains outside of "normal."
To give another example, obesity is not normal; however, it is generally recognized that one should not discriminate on the basis of obesity.
For Ellen and other homosexuals residing in California, I say good luck. However, my gut instinct is that this will be a short victory, quickly overturned by a new ballot measure that will, as in Oregon, define marriage as between a man and a woman, as nature intended.
Ellen Degeneres Vs. John McCain: Gay Marriage
Now don't get me wrong here folks. I may be a bit sarcastic and angry about the popular view of whom I f%#k. Or how my hair length influences my levels of dykeness. I try to understand others comfort levels, but the rabble rouser in me just doesn't care. I don't want to be your cookie cutter. I don't want conformity to make me easily digestable to the masses. I'm not kool-aid, I'm not processed cheeze. Somedays I'm more tolerant to others idiotic commentary to my "lifestyle". Today doesn't happen to be that day. Today is the first day of the rest of my life. Pretty a-typical, boring, and remarkably drama-free day. Yet, I can still get my socks in a bunch over various things. There is one thing though...If i want to marry the person I love and am comitted to it is my right as an american. I wish that people would look beyond their weak moral fiber at the big picture: you, me, they them, those people, these people all want the same thing. Happyness. Who is anybody to deny another that?
