Politics Homeless Protesters Ask Mayor Potter for Another Meeting

Posted by Amy J. Ruiz on Sun, May 11 at 7:03 PM

This just in: The protesters outside of city hall have asked Mayor Tom Potter for another meeting, to have “a real dialogue about the issues of homelessness and affordable housing.” The letter, sent today and accompanied by two pages of signatures from protesters (those are after the cut), requests a meeting by the close of business on Tuesday—prior to the “any attempt to remove our protest,” per the new “illegal campground” signs that sprouted up outside of city hall yesterday morning. The letter also requests a response by noon tomorrow. Finally, the protesters say “the dialogue you and your staff have with our representatives must be open to public observation,” unlike last week’s private meeting.

Click on that for a bigger version. It’s worth noting that the letter came to us via city council candidate Jeff Bissonnette—who’s been putting his community organizing skills to work, quietly, behind the scenes in the past few days, trying to find a resolution to the protest.

As for that 5 pm meeting tonight: It was a small group of local activists who planned things like a response to police sweeps, and how to get more non-homeless people down to city hall to show solidarity. So, in short, their message is to grab your sleeping bag and head to city hall on Monday night, to join the hundred-plus (and growing) protesters.
