News Protesters Disband and Leave, Back Tomorrow

Posted by Matt Davis on Tue, May 13 at 8:12 PM

The homeless protesters outside city hall have decided to disband and leave for tonight, to regroup and return in the morning and avoid being swept by the cops. Representative Art Rios, Sr. told the crowd, and three different TV cameras, at 7:30 that the protesters can claim a series of “great big victories,” including a conversation with the mayor, and “great support from the community,” but that by cleaning up and returning in the morning, the protesters can create a “win-win situation.” Behind him, a 12-foot banner read “Repeal the Sit/Lie Ordinance.”protestend1.jpg
Rios thanked everyone gathered for their efforts, and said “When I started this, I didn’t expect it to be this big. We’ll be here again tomorrow, and we’re not going away.” People started packing up to go, almost immediately.protestend2.jpg

One protester, named Tim, started screaming “bullshit, bullshit, bullshit, you never asked me…” and ran around for about five minutes. Eventually he calmed down after being confronted by three fellow protesters. Not everyone was happy with the decision to move on, and Tim, who before Rios’ announcement, had been singing civil war songs, started parading around with an upside-down American flag:

“I think it’s going to clean the sidewalk up, and I think it will bring back the people who are really serious about this,” said protester Katie Nilson, who has also been with the protest since it started. “And I hope the guy who’s really angry about this will come back tomorrow.” The group plans to meet tomorrow morning at 8:30 at the Skidmore fountain and return to city hall to testify before council. protestend5.jpg
“If there’s only three of us out here in the morning,” said Rios, “well then there’s only three of us out here. We’re not trying to hurt anyone’s feelings but I guess it was inevitable that someone would be upset.” For tonight, everyone will have to find somewhere else to sleep, and hope they don’t get moved on by the cops. protestend6.jpg
Good luck to them.

the guy named Tim got it wrong, "horse shit".
I do believe the term is "Quisling"
they had the city on the run and decided it was time to give up.

Those people need to get a job. Who's got time to hang out on a sidewalk for that long? Also, where in the hell are the homeless people this law actually affects? A LOT ought to be sitting right next to them if they're worried about changing the law.

Hi Matt, Mynah Byrd here I was at CH until 12am to make sure that EVERYBODY was ok. I left a little after 12am and I did not see any cops. I am sure that they came later but I don't know I have to work today but as soon as I am done with work I'll be down there again. Thanks a million for you and Amy and the mer for doing a bang up job on this story. Respectfully Mynah Byrd

Hey Matt and all,

Just a quick note to update folks that what the media reported en mass was inaccurate. Not sure if Rios was empowered to speak by the group or if he took that task upon himself, but there were about 50 protesters who spent the night, most of whom were well thought out in their determination to NOT go anywhere when the police showed up- both as acts of civil disobedience as well as plain old desperation because they have nowhere else to go.

SO anyway, maybe it was because of media reports or maybe because our group did shrink after Rios' announcement, but the cops never showed as promised. Folks should be filing into city hall now getting ready to testify on behalf of the city's homeless and all of our civil rights.
