Fashion A Word on Maternity

Posted by Marjorie Skinner on Tue, Jun 24 at 11:03 AM

This morning, a coworker of mine who is due in mid-August was lamenting how hard it is for her to shop for maternity clothes. So far she’s had pretty good luck taking advantage of the current market for babydoll or empire-waisted tops and dresses. She can just buy the large and call it good. Now that it’s in the final stretch, though, it’s getting to be more of a challenge. Especially since it’s for such a temporary time in her life and she doesn’t want to spend a lot of money. Nolita has designer maternity jeans, which ain’t cheap, but might be worth the investment if she wore them a ton, but other than that I realized I don’t really have an answer for her. I, uh, haven’t ever had to think about it, but honestly I think if I were her, especially since it’s summer, would buy up all the muumuus I could find at the thrift store, hack off the bottoms, and rock mini muumuus till it was all over. But in the interest of doing some surveying on her behalf, does anyone have any other style tips for the last trimester?!

Something like this, except less drunk.

Protip: stitch together multiple burlap sacks to form a go-anywhere MEGASACK.

I was at Target over the weekend and eyeing some items, only to discover they were maternity. Cheap, yes, and there were pants. The only pattern difference in the tops were where the side seams were placed (further back then normal but not overly noticeable). So they could be wearable after the baby. Pants too, if she needs some eatin' pants.

I could go the rest of my life without ever hearing the phrase "eatin' pants" again.

Also, if I admitted that pregnant women gross me out, would someone find a way to use that opportunity to call me misogynistic? I can't help it, though; they do. I think now that I'm 30, this fall is the fall when I finally get a vasectomy.

First and foremost, congrats to your friend. I have a 2 month old and the last trimester is not yet a distant memory. I shopped for trapeze tops at Ross and went to a few resale maternity/kids boutiques like Piccolina on Clinton, where I was actually able to find pretty cute jeans and blazers for work. It was cost effective and I am still able to wear those flowy tops in my post partum phase without looking prenatal any longer. As for those stretchy topped jeans, they're actually quite comfy for the first few weeks (or months) after the little one is born, but again they can be exchanged at resale boutiques for all the stuff she's gonna need for her baby.

A refreshing departure from big box mundanities. Classic style w/modern appeal. Comfortable too!

I wish I could convince her to make some for those of us w/o "the bump".

It's summer and it's only going to get hotter. I had a summer baby a few years ago, and I rocked light dresses and sandals the last two months of my pregnancy. Hit all the thrift stores and buy some summery dresses on the cheap.

there is nothing wrong with being drunk in your last trimester, right?

i am so glad i am not asking this question.

Were I preggers (Zeus forbid) I would buy my pregger duds at consignment stores and Goodwill.

After canceling his September performance in Portland, Neil Diamond is back and ready to blow us out of our seats! Fine, maybe he won’t “blow us,” but I bet he’ll come to the stage locked and loaded with hits such as “Cherry, Cherry,” “Sweet Caroline,” and “I’m a Believer.” And does anybody remember “Heartlight”? I do! WSH
