The Crap Cannon

Posted by Matt Davis on Tue, Jul 22, 2008 at 2:28 PM

This month's Portland cop paper, the Rap Sheet, carries a syndicated Fox news piece about a new crowd control device, "rumored" to be used against "protesters" at the Democratic National Convention in Denver. The cannon, reads the piece, blasts low frequency noise at protesters...

"Also called "Brown Note," it is believed to be an infrasound frequency that debilitates a person by making them defecate involuntarily.
I love a good hoax as much as the next person, but nowhere around the story does anybody seem to be acknowledging that this is, in fact, a joke. Republican humor is edgy, I guess. Still: Weapons of Ass Destruction! Etcetera...

Joke or not, I still love the image of a bunch of crusty punks crapping themselves, taking a handful, and throwing it at the cops.

Sir:

Humor on Faux News? As in ha-ha humor, or, chortle humor, or, simper humor?

On Faux News?

You're sure of this? Humor?

On Faux News?

Merde'.

I remain your humble servant,

If I was hit with that thing, my first instinct would be to toss a handful at the asshole who pulled the trigger.

Any weapon used to disorient or incapacitate people is not good for crowd control - it induces panic in the crowd and subjects the city to additional liability due to the injuries it will cause.

Pepper spray, rubber bullets, and any of these vaporware weapons that float around conspiracy theory websites are meant to *incapacitate* people - fine for making an arrest of an actively resisting person, but a liability for crowd control, as they cannot be targeted towards the one rock-thrower in a crowd of 1000 people peacefully exercising their Constitutional rights.
