Two Strokes: No Jokes...

Posted by Matt Davis on Mon, Aug 18, 2008 at 9:23 AM

Scooter-riding pals of a man who has suffered two back-to-back strokes are planning a fundraising event this Saturday.

Steve Sellers, 34, has been part of the Portland scooter scene for well over a decade, and is a member of the Twist'n'Play scooter club. He got sick with the flu back in April, but never got over it. Because Sellers didn't have health insurance, he didn't immediately go to a doctor. After becoming progressively more ill over two months, he was finally diagnosed with Congestive Heart Failure and admitted to Providence Hospital's Cardiac ICU.

He was immediately put on anti-coagulants to thin his blood and reduce the swelling in his heart. Unfortunately, several blood clots were loosened resulting in both a minor and a major stroke. The second stroke left him partially paralyzed and unable to speak. Currently Sellers is undergoing physical, occupational and speech therapy at an inpatient rehabilitation center in NE Portland.

"I just keep thinking there has to be a better way for this country to handle health insurance," says Tracy Ball, also a member of Twist N Play Scooter Club. "Steve was working full-time for a small business. I'm working for myself. I have health insurance but of course I have to foot the whole bill and it's equal to half my rent. Not everyone can afford to do that. To be brutally honest, I can't really afford it either."

On Saturday, August 23rd, friends and family of Steve Sellers will come together for a Medical Relief Fundraiser. It begins at 9:00 pm at Plan B (1305 S.E. 8th Avenue). The event will feature both DJ'd and live music, the Rose City Royal Tease burlesque crew, and a large raffle of prizes donated by local Portland businesses. The event is open to all people interested in having a good time and helping a good cause, "but please try to resist the two-stroke jokes," say his pals.
