This Is NOT Mean, I Swear...

Posted by Matt Davis on Fri, Aug 22, 2008 at 5:00 PM

But if people are on the fence, we aim to help. And it's not like we're sending them to the lions' den...they get two years' salary! So. Who should accept the Oregonian's buyout offer? Click away...

If you feel we missed someone, toss 'em in the comments.

Wait! Jonathan Nicolas! Is Maggi White on their staff?

Can we have a "keep em" list? Inara V and Prince Valiant ONLY ON SUNDAYS (so the story is forever disjointed).

Chelsea Cain's columns make my skin crawl (as did the self-congratulatory interview she did with herself to mark the release of her crappy novel), so she should certainly be on the list.

I'm pretty sure they only draw one Prince Valiant a week, so that's as coherent as the story is ever going to get (Two weeks ago: Gawain steps on what he thinks is an island. Last week: Oh wait, it's a giant crab. This week: the giant crab attacks!)

Oh Christ. Chelsea Cain is one of the worst writers I've ever seen, even by the standard of the O.

Margie Boule needs to be shot, though, and Tom Hallman Jr. deserves to have that Pulitzer forcibly removed from his home, and replaced with a Kurt Vonnegut Award for the Finest and Most Repetitive Use of the One Sentence Paragraph.

And S. Renee Mitchell is a moron. Sorry to say, since it would seem to make me predjudiced against both black people and women, although it is simply that I dislike morons, and has nothing to do with either gender or race.

But David Reinhard is the pure beating heart of ignorant-and-proud-of-it, so he deserves...

Wait a minute: why can't we vote on multiple writers, and when will we have a similar chance regarding The Merc?

Allison Hallett! Your time is up!

Portland Mercury March 2008 Circulation: 41,854 (looks like that is down from previous years?)

Seriously? Advertisers pay all your salaries based on a circ of less than 50K?

Does anyone remember that one time that Matt offered to run a poll where the readers could decide whether he was fired or not? Whatever happened there?

[still knows]

Remember the one about the mace, kitty?

David Reinhard, definitely. If the O was really desperate for that conservative view, then it could just run George Will. Might as well run the original rather than the clone, right?

Matt, it's so very strange that you haven't taken me up on that offer. I wonder why you wouldn't be taking me up on it, you clever boy.

Ah, here we go:

Ian: "So: how long till Matt Davis gets it over with and writes a cover article that is explicitly, honestly, and not simply indirectly about himself; and then adds an edgy reader poll to decide whether he should be fired or retained at the Mercury?"

Matt: "Ian: I'm happy to run such a poll on the blog, Monday. And be bound by its outcome..."

Ian: "Matt-- if you're that insecure, please run the poll."

Matt: "I'm not going to run a "sack me" poll."

What a suprise (and god, what a classic initial post)... OK, I'm done with work, and off to get drunk. Carry on with the "I KNOW WHO YOU AREZ!!!", Matt. Classy, as per usual.

That was a really tough call considering I was only allowed one vote. How about ousting the entire Oregonlive team for creating/maintaining(?) the most unusable website circa 2008.

I'm voting with alan on this one - OregonLive is embarrassingly bad. That rehab job went from bad to worse. They didn't fix the search function either.

You're all probably too young to remember Stickel's fixation on telephone recordings of news articles. Way back in the late 80s, the Oregonian (and many other Advance papers around the country) devoted huge resources to creating audio recordings of most local news - columns, recipes, sports scores - and making them available via a phone call. Very unpopular, especially with the news staff who had to narrate their crappy stories as well as type them.

But I want to vote FOR the Oregonian building, especially the 4th and a 1/2 floor - which once was the location of KGW TV. Another silly idea from a bygone era.

What on earth does Peter Ames Carlin do to merit 100K a year? For that matter and that paycheck: Tom Hallman, Karen Brooks...
And please get rid of Chelsea Cain. The "stay-at-home reporter."

Peter Ames makes 100k????? Holla fuck, I'm in the wrong biz! Sign me up for writing shitty, esoteric, mindless, wandering reviews ASAP!

richbachelor = genius! S Reene is atrocious, so is Blowhard errr Reinhard (I do appreciate his interest in pissing off the libtards tho)...and I agree, time to vote someone off the Merc island - Allison Hallett, POOF!

It isn't cruel. The Oregonian is a business, and one that's struggling. Perhaps it could do better if it gave readers (AKA customers) what they want (like a decent website, top notch content and apparently, from this poll, less of Reinhard).

That, and daily paper writers have thick skins.

Any paper with the headlines "Rattled Democrats Target McCain" Should just close their doors for good. Apparently being a corporate shill isn't working out so well for them financially.
