Yesterday, I went to brunch at the Rogue Pub and Distillery at 14th and Flanders in NW Portland. Apparently, every Sunday, they offer a build-your-own-bloody bar. Shamefully, I'd never been to a build-your-own-bloody brunch, but I found the experience both uplifting and wonderfully intoxicating.
So, the bartender pours the shot, the customer adds all the crap (I requested an additional shot of stout), the bartender shakes it up, and you're on your way with a custom-made beverage. Ingenious. Yes, I realize my "Gee Whiz" reaction to this novelty is a bit outmoded, considering its been around for awhile, but it was my first time. And who wasn't all starry eyed about their first?
With that in mind, Blogtownies, I have some questions:
1. Where are the best places to build your own?
2. What the hell do you tip, considering you're doing, like, half of the work?*
Your guidance is always appreciated.
*note: I tipped a dollar for mine.

Having to build my own BM pisses me off.
Why should I pay somebody else real money and then have to make my own drink?
Just throwing a bunch of shit out onto a table then having customers do the dirty work is crap.
If I hand money to a bartender, it's because I want a delicious and complete cocktail in return.
Many people - even some that I know - think making drinks at bars is fun because it can be done to his/her own liking, but I think it's way better to just find an awesome bartender/establishment that can do that for me.
So I won't answer your questions, PAC, because I do not want to acknowledge or encourage the prevalence of this gimmicky trend.
Holmans has a great build your own bloody mary setup on Sunday.
A dollar sounds reasonable for a tip.

I guess I was too hungover to think it through. You make a valid point. That's why I started these posts in the first place--to find that magical spot in town where I can enjoy a well-made cure.
Oh, how I've strayed. But it was novel, and fun. So the questions stand.
