Google Maps Strikes Again

It's hard to tell what the poor guy is doing, but you can see a larger version in the original here.

He is praying to God for the mercy of the people to give him a dollar so he can eat that day.

Really.

I always see that guy - he's a pan handler who prostrates for cash. Usually on NE Broadway.

yeah, i've seen one dude in the pearl doing the same thing.
he keeps bowing/shouting to "god"/praising with his hands/asking for mercy and such.

i've seen him take hand outs a few times before. but oftentimes, he just wanders through traffic and does cart wheels (with backpack) down the park blocks.

And there I was, contemplating the need for an In The Shadows column for next week...

Who better to do it on, Matt?
He is the epitome of our society's failings- more mercy is given to a stray cat than a black man...
sometimes...

Some of these off-ramp panhandlers make $80/day. It helps to have a gimmic like this guy.

gripeboy, if you only knew his day-to-day reality, you would cry.

See Matt, we need a story!

well, it sounds like "the people" already knows his "day to day REALITY".... therefore matt doesn't need to do a story. "the people" can provide it.

I used to commute past that spot every day... I could be mistaken, but I believe he also has a "bet you can't hit me with a quarter" sign. If it is him, his pockets are usually full of change.

I'm sorry you weren't held enough as a child, but don't take it out on the rest of us that are hurting...
it just doesn't help.

While we're at it, guys, is there anybody else you think I should be doing stories on? Suggestions like these are always welcome!

"the people": get off your computer and go help him if you're so touched by his alleged desperation.

He's stretching. That big bag of money he has to carry back to his home in the west hills is heavy. Especially with all the freakin change people give him. Cash only please! Give the guy a break.

I've seen this guy more than once while waiting for the bus on Broadway. This man is broken and should not be on the streets, sooner or later he's going to get hit by a car.

I have.
But I also have to survive.

What have you done to help humanity?

Hey, if the guy is legit, so be it. Help a brutha out. I'm just saying that there are some con artists out there. Then again, what's the harm in helping a few con artists when you can help a lot of other needy people.

I still don't understand why we don't just pay the homeless to pick up trash. They're out there standing around. Why not make them feel like they're worth something while giving them money. Geez, I'll give some tax dollars for that.

I used to see him every day, but he hasn't been at that corner for a while. I originally thought he was a devout Muslim, since prostrate prayer is a common sight among the faithful. One day in the spring I gently reminded him that he was facing north, and Mecca is east of here. He told me he was a Christian, and was just reaching out to God. My assumptions are always wrong.
