Politics Don't Cross Dave

As noted earlier by The Stranger's Eli Sanders (who was apparently just too busy to bother calling me back at the DNC), John McCain's campaign suspension cancelled the candidate's appearance on David Letterman.
Well hooooo boy did Letterman have a go at McCain's ridiculous posturing (which has already been met with a near-universal shoulder shrug followed by a "what the fuck is he thinking?"). Consummate professional he is, Letterman filled the time with aplomb, which cracks harder as the clip progresses:
"This doesn't smell right," Dave says. Seriously.
If McCain continues the campaign suspension rather than being whipped back into shape by aides who know better--as with the "our economy is fundamentally strong" flip-flop--he could be left in some really shitty shape. If Johnny Boy misses the debates he'll appear unprepared, scared or both. Is it plausible that this could be McCain's Dukakis Tank moment?
And really, how many times can a gambler shoot the moon? McCain did it with Palin, and while those results will take a little longer to materialize, this doubling down could leave the Senator with a frightfully short stack of chips. Then again, when you're in the hole deep, sometimes the only way out is to go all-in.
