Cops Still Parking In No Parking Zones

Posted by Matt Davis on Wed, Oct 1, 2008 at 10:42 AM

Torridjoe of Loaded Orygun writes, asking whether the city ever decided whether or not to allow cops to park in no parking zones while getting food and snacks on duty. You may remember this comes from a story back in July, where a citizen fined a cop $35 for parking illegally outside a restaurant in the middle of his shift. Afterward, the city attorney's office said it planned to work on changing the law to make it alright for cops to do this. Although no news as yet, as far as I'm aware. So, er, these two may wish to park differently for the time being. "I snapped these two shots about a week ago, after two motorcycle cops went in to the Starbucks on 3rd and Jefferson, and hung out for at least 15 minutes while in a no-stopping zone," says TJ.

hypothetically speaking, you're loved one is being robbed at gun point and calls 911. The closest police officers are near 3rd & Jefferson. Would you rather A) the cops be close to their motorcycles so they can zoom off and save the day or B) the cops run back to their motorcycles which are located two blocks away delaying their response time, only to find your loved one dead?

I choose C) The officers on duty while these are not on duty respond to the call.

Wouldn't be difficult to call 911 while being robbed at gunpoint? I would expect the robbers would tell you to put your phone down.

Sirs:

As one of Portland's Finest so plainly stated, there are some ordinances that are simply too, too inconvenient to enforce. Especially when it's time for din-din.

Please bear in mind that in Portland, the Police are sworn to enforce the law, not obey it.

I remain, yadda, yadda, God this is repetitive,

Ya, what Jacomus says. Besides, if they can't sprint a block or two to retrieve their cycles, I don't think I would want their help. They might have a stroke or, Heaven Forbid, they might FALL on me and break my ribs 26 times.

I repeat what I said the last time they did this: If the parking meter rates in Portland were raised so that there was enough available (legal) parking, then police wouldn't have to block no parking zones. But socialist experiment in giving things away for less than they are worth are doomed to create shortages, and unless we intend to address those shortages, (tear down buildings and build more parking,) this problem will continue...
