Brooklyn Taser Cop Shoots Himself

Posted by Matt Davis on Thu, Oct 2 at 9:35 AM

Sorry to be a downer, but...

A tragic follow-up to last Thursday's death of a mentally ill man in Brooklyn, who fell ten feet to his death after being Tasered: The officer who ordered the Tasering has shot himself dead. More at the NY Times.

I can't imagine what must have been going through the officer's mind when he pulled the trigger...that he might somehow make things "right" by doing it? The guy had been placed on desk duty, but one thing's pretty sure: He needed better counseling. The police department has already ordered refresher training on dealing with people experiencing mental illness, let's hope it reviews its officer-involved-death procedures, too. And may both men now rest in peace.

If you actually can't imagine what was going through this officer's mind, you might want to consider working on your empathy. While tragic, the chain of emotional events should be pretty obvious to anyone vaguely familiar with human-kind. Maybe rent some Kurosawa or something...
