Rose Quarter Transit Center is Nearly Open for Bikes

Posted by Amy J. Ruiz on Wed, Oct 15, 2008 at 3:54 PM

On my way to city hall this morning, I passed through the Rose Quarter Transit Center, and saw workers busily applying the green thermoplastic that designates bike boxes, as part of the new bike route cutting through the transit center. Technically speaking, bikes haven't been allowed through that area before.

The new route will officially open tomorrow, with a "bike parade" featuring Mayor-elect Sam Adams and TriMet General Manager Fred Hansen, and bike advocates.

The parade kicks off from NE Wheeler, between NE Interstate and Multnomah, at 1:45 pm tomorrow.

I hope you remember all this joy, in a few months when you are reporting about how a bus crushed a cyclist there.
There are some places that bikes should not go, and this is one of them.

Yada, yada, yada. I've heard the same anti-bike, pro pollute / obesity rhetoric plenty of other times. Bikes, pedestrians, insects and all manner of creatures should be able to "go" there too. As long as the cyclists exercise common courtesy and respect (as they should receive, too), all will be fine. However, commennts such as those from blah perpetuate the "us," and "them" attitude. Get off ya duff, put down the smokes and get some exercise!

I've been cutting through the center for over a year now. With the lack of cars, and the fact that buses and light rail trains are oh-so-easy to spot and then avoid, I actually feel more safe cruising through there than I do on Vancouver/Williams.

This city is now a parody of itself.

AMY RUIZ HAS BEEN A RUTHLESS LAWBREAKER, by her own admission!

Is there a statute of limitations on bicycle citations? Can we make a citizens arrest over this issue?

Well, only kidding Amy, but it makes good press, and we all like that don't we!?

Bikes through the rose quarter, STUPID STUPID STUPID!

However, as Amy has kindly demonstrated, ruthless lawbreakers on Bikes are the norm in Portland, so what the hell, let them gamble with their lives. They are the ones that will get killed or maimed by this stupidity.

If that's what they want, then by all means let em ride through the middle of bedlam.
