UPDATE: Commissioner Dan Saltzman will be the next police commissioner.

"I arrive at this decision after careful consideration and have determined this action to be in the best interest of the city," Mayor-elect Sam Adams says. Letting Saltzman's "steady hand" lead the police bureau will allow Adams to focus on high school drop outs and planning for Portland's growth.

"I will limit his portfolio so he can be a nearly full time police commissioner in a way a mayor never could," Adams says. "Commissioner Saltzman's decade of accomplishments and passion for those with the greatest need will make him a great police commissioner." He's established a one-stop center for domestic violence victims, and heads up the Children's Investment Fund.

"Rosie will continue to be the police chief," Adams adds, and announces that he'll be the commissioner in charge of the Office of Emergency Management.

"The city needs a mayor who can focus on jobs, economic development, and pressing infrastructure issues," says Saltzman. "When he hits the ground running in January, he will definitely do a lot of good things for the citizens of this city in addressing these issues. And in support of that, I'm here to accept the position of police commissioner."

His priorities? "Working on child abuse and domestic violence issues, gang violence, consumer fraud, and neighborhood livability," he says. "Internally, I see the top priority being the hiring and training of more police officers."

Sizer would "like to thank Mayor-elect Sam Adams and Commissioner Dan Saltzman for their confidence in me," she says. "Although it is untraditional for a mayor not to keep the police bureau in his portfolio, I will keep him informed" of major issues.

She also threw a shout out to Commissioner Randy Leonard for "his interest in public safety," a reference to the drama that's been ongoing over the past few months.

Adams says he's asked Saltzman to work with the chief to hammer out a work plan of all of the issues "that need to be addressed by the police bureau" by the end of the year.

Adams acknowledges that "the conversations" about giving the bureau to Saltzman "have really ensued since Leonard took himself out of the running" late last week.

Adams says he'll be utilizing a "team-oriented" approach to running the city, asking his colleagues to take on new and tough assignments. "I think a fair criticism of me, and the advice I've received from my former boss Mayor Katz is to focus... I need to focus as mayor. And I'm taking that criticism to heart. This is my way of focusing on these issues we need to tackle as a city, or they're going to bring us down."

Noting that crime is at a 20-year low, Adams says he'll continue to monitor "what's in the city's best interest" and assign and reassign bureaus as needed.
