Rocket Closes

A press release was sent to local media today, informing us that Leather Storrs' Rocket, at 1111 E Burnside St., will be closing on November 8th. The reason?

Economic pressure and critical dissatisfaction combine to make continuing on our current course impossible.

Critical dissatisfaction? I don't believe the Mecury ever had the pleasure to review Rocket, but the comments on our on-line restaurant guide were mixed at best. Also, Karen Brooks of the Oregonian, wrote a review of the eatery titled "Rocket's Stuck On the Launch Pad." Yikes.

As an intern at another city publication, I spoke to Leather Storrs before Rocket opened, while fact checking an article about the building. He was intensely excited about the project and seemed to relish the fact that he would be able grow his own arugula (or rocket, thus the restaurants name) and other produce in the private, roof-top garden.

Apparently there is still plenty of produce on the roof—the press release urges folks to come by and help them finish it off, along with whatever booze is left. To that end, service will continue at Rocket for the next two weeks.

The space will remain active after the 8th as a venue for private events. As for what happens with investors, employees, and debts:

This is not a tragedy. Employees will be paid, debts will be honored and there will be no absconding with cash. There are no investors left holding an empty bag. The ripples of our closure are contained.

I guess this should serve as a lesson to the spate of restaurants set to open in coming months: In this economy, you'd better be on the ball.
