Hear Rorschach Get All Gravelly in the New Watchmen Trailer; See the First Image from Kick-Ass.

Posted by Erik Henriksen on Fri, Nov 14, 2008 at 10:28 AM

Couple of comic book-y, movie-y things this a.m. First things first:

Reactions? Here at the Mercury, opinions from both Watchmen fans and neophytes is DIVIDED.*

Also:

That's the first official image from the upcoming adaptation of Kick-Ass, Mark Millar and John Romita Jr.'s funny, dark, ultraviolent comic about a delusional high schooler who decides to put on a wet suit and play superhero, getting... well, his ass kicked in the process. Here's hoping this Millar adaptation goes over better than Wanted.

*ADDENDUM! I just got off the phone with Watchmen artist Dave Gibbons (in the next week or two, we'll be running an interview with him about his new book, Watching the Watchmen). We briefly spoke about the movie, and here's something he said that seems relevant to the new trailer.

People do become very possessive about a thing like Watchmen, and when there's a movie going to be made, they get worried it's going to get trashed, or it's going to be misrepresented.... My feeling is that the people who're making the movie are fans themselves and are very much aware of those feelings. And my feeling is that none but the most absolutely rigid fans will be disappointed by the movie--and maybe even the really rigid, fundamentalist fans will find something to like in it as well.

I do NOT like how Rorschach keeps talking about the 'Watchmen' in the trailer. Outside of set exposition, I don't think anyone ever utters the phrase 'Watchmen' in the actual movie. I mean, someone's killing off the Minutemen, to be sure...

It's a well-cut trailer, though those VOICES. Rorschach could sound a lot more like the crazy degenerate ginger he is, and Dr Manhattan isn't nearly as depressed and eeyore-like as in my head.

Oh well. I'll make sure to complain more cogently after midnight on 3/6/09...

yea Rorschach's voice is a bit off. i was also thinking about the way they had the ink on his mask constantly morph. it's one approach but it might have been more interesting to have the ink change with each shot. that would have been in more of the comic books style.

actually i'm pretty optimistic about this movie. but i always look at movie adaptations from the perspective that a shitty move doesn't make the source material any less great.

you guys...rorshach´s voice is the same alan moore used long ago while reading rorschach´s diary.

this movie looks great, and rorschach´s character looks even greater in real-life-motion.

Well, I'm still annoyed by how young and snazzy most of the heroes look, and all the slo-mo, and the new ending, but I'm sure it'll still be a fun action movie in its own right.

manhattan isn't as arrogant/sad sounding. i figured he would be like a failed MIT phd legacy student who is now an asst manager at a fast food chain?

lately i've been thinking that rorshach would be like don draper's little brother in mad men.

i always wanted to see someone reporting they saw rorshach go something like
"what did he look like?"
"well, it was more like...uh...bunnies...jumping through leaves on...a midwest plain?"

good trailer, i really felt like i saw the whole thing in the first one and that streetlight still from earlier months. i think i'll go as rorshach for thanksgiving.
