Cutest Photo of Sam Adams EVER

Posted by Sarah Mirk on Mon, Nov 17, 2008 at 11:52 AM

While commentors expressed some disappointment about the small size and nonexistent sound system of Portland's Anti-Prop 8 rally this weekend, I think something happened that day which we can all be happy about: mayor-Elect Sam Adams posed for photos with a bunch of adorable old guys fighting "gnome-ahomophobia."

No civil rights march, but a definite cutie parade.

Just before the beloved Gnomeland Security crew grabbed the focus of the mayor-elect for the photo op, I was trying to talk to Sam about fixing the marriage problem.
Sam Adams will be the mayor of the biggest city in Oregon. He's gay and in a visible leadership position. Although Multnomah County issues marriage licenses in the Portland area, I still think Sam could play a role in this solution:
Multnomah County stops issuing all marriage licenses, offering instead civil unions to all couples. All couples could experience what a bunch of crap civil unions are at the institutional and Federal level. If you want to get 'married' you got to go somewhere else. Multnomah County, and by association and visibility, Portland, could lead the national discussion toward the ultimate resolution: the government gets out of the marriage business and leaves that to the churches.
The activist part of me wants everyone to have to suffer through getting their government marriages changed to government civil unions, and the practical part of me says that grandfathering will be necessary.
This issue is one where the far right and the far left have a common cause: letting religions have marriage. Our constitution dictates the separation of church and State. Our marriage laws do not reflect that.
Lead the nation forward Sam. You are in the perfect position.

The sound system *was* pretty bad. They asked me to speak and with only about 30 seconds to prepare I got up there and babbled something about equality and unity. Nobody could hear me, but I looked fabulous!

Here's what I said about posing with Sam Adams the day it happened:
I also got a photo op with mayor-elect Sam Adams. He spoke eloquently and passionately, and got a really good response from the crowd. As he was trying to quietly sneak off, I tapped him on the shoulder and asked if I could get a photo op. He graciously agreed. The funny thing is that I really just wanted the pic for my own
purposes, but as soon as I posed with him, about 50 people were taking our pictures. Plus, there were these guys dressed as gnomes called "Gnomeland Security" and they were posing with us too. It was crazy. I turned to Sam and said, "Well, there goes your next election."

They kept chanting "hey - ho homognomeophopia's got to go! Which was pretty entertaining since you couldn't hear a single speaker unless you were right in front of them.

Personally I think the cutest photo of Sam Adams is the one he took with my dog, Alfie:

We had a gigantic prop 8 march here.

In San Francisco. Where I live now.

In the city of San Francisco. I live there. Here.

Not Portland. San Francisco.

Gnomes!

sorry about the slander, guys. I thought you qualified as "old" but I obviously need to improve my gnomenclature.

WHo you calling OLD GUYS!!! I'll have you gnome that for our people, we're actually quite young! The folks in the picture are Norm and Dale Pointdickstir, Mayor Elect Sam Adams, Little Hummer, and Sister Krissy Fiction. We were working the rally for Gnomeland Security. Gnomes have always had full marriage rights and equality. I know a gnome who married a squirrel, he was nuts about her! Please help continue the fight against gnomaphobes in gardens around the world.

Sincerely,
Norm and Dale Pointdickstir
